Default Prayer without the microphone

I just started to wonder something after I watched a shayk leading prayer at Masjid Al-Haraam by using the microphone.

How did the shayks do this without the microphone during Hajj before the advancement of technology?
Would they just raise their voice (which is just impossible with hunderds of thousands of people) or was there a special technique?

Are there any sources related to this?

They used mukabbirs. The guy you hear after the imam repeating Allahu Akbar.

There were many mukabbirs.
