Hi, I was just wondering, what happens to a person in between death and the judgement? Or is there no gap from the point of view of the person? Is this period different for Muslims and non-Muslims? Thanks |

Dear flipflops,
I invite you to Islam from the corner of my heart. The question you have asked will, Insha Allah, unfold very interesting aspects of life after death but before the Day of Judgment. There is a book by Maulana Aashiq Ilahi Bulandshahri (RA) whose original title would translate to What Will Happen After Death? I do not know whether its English translation is available online or not. If it is there then it will answer most of your questions. Love |

Thanks all for your kind replies from every corner! I also found that verse 10:45 suggests it will seem like no time has passed between death and the judgement (that's how Jalalayn understands it anyway):
PICKTHAL: And on the day when He shall gather them together, (when it will seem) as though they had tarried but an hour of the day, recognising one another, those will verily have perished who denied the meeting with Allah and were not guided. I'm not sure what to make of the hadith on muftisays.com That sounds like people go to paradise or hell straight away from their point of view, but it doesn't mention the resurrection as far as I could see. At one point it says "His soul is then restored to his body", so maybe that's the resurrection. Or maybe the idea is we leave hell briefly for the judgement day, then go back or to another hell. |

Thanks all for your kind replies from every corner! I also found that verse 10:45 suggests it will seem like no time has passed between death and the judgement (that's how Jalalayn understands it anyway): The technical name for the period between death and the Judgment Day is barzakh. For we mortal people the time flows as it does. So between death and destruction of this world we can measure the time. And then, after destruction and recreation for the Accounting, we do not know. About the time bwtween our death and the destruction of the whole cosmos we know a few things. Beloved Prophet (PBUH) said that the grave is either a garden from the gardens of the Heavens or a pit from the pits of Hell. Both the Heavens and the Hell have been created and they are their. For a person having left with good deeds a window to is place in the Heavens will be opened and he will be pleased to see it. Obviously the time will pass like blur. Then on the day of destruction both the Heavens and the Hell will be destroyed so that ultimately only God is there with full Glory, Gandeur and Honour-even if there is no body to notice it. He (SWT) does not need us. I hope these things fill up some gaps. Love |
