I need your help Canadian brothers and sisters!
My family and I might immigrate to Canada next year, but we haven’t decided which province to go to yet . The available choices are Toronto, Ontario and Calgary, Alberta. My parents want to go to whichever is more suitable for us as Muslims. Specially that my two brothers are still young. I need your advice. Thanks in advance |

Both have their pros and cons. Toronto has more Muslims and therefore more masjids, madrassas, organizations, job opportunities within Muslim communities, halal outlets. One the downside, you will find segregation among the different communities to some extent eg Gujraties stay with Gujraties, Afghanies stay with Afghanies, etc. This however lessen as you go nearer to the suburbs, and places like Mississauga. Calgary is smaller than Toronto, hence you will find more cohesiveness within the community in comparison to Toronto. There are not as many Muslims in Calgary, though there is a healthy community of Muslims there. They also have masjids and maktabs. They have a few places one can get halal food from. I personally would suggest Toronto for someone with children. |

... there is a large Ahmadiyya community who I think have just built the largest mosque in Canada. It's important to use these terms to [1] distinguish muslims from qadiyani non-muslims and [2] for those who don't know so they don't get confused into thinking that qadiyanis are actually muslims. |

Thank u and jazakum Allah khairan
Thank u Hamood for clarifying this, I don't know who are the Quadianis. I think It's Toronto, but there is a point on the side of Calgary. Through searching we knew that Toronto has a higher crime rate. This is a big issue for us because my father works in Saudia Arabia, and he won't be with us most of time. I'll make "Estekharah" and ISA will head to toronto. |

I need your help Canadian brothers and sisters! Masha Allah. Your family has made a really good decision of moving to the most beautiful country in the world. : ) The country is clean. People are kind towards Muslims. The weather is awesome. A good Muslim presence. What more do you want? A bit of info on both places. Toronto has a much larger population than Calgary. Toronto's Muslim population is almost 300,000 (2009) whereas Calgary has a Muslim population of about 30,000. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islam_in_Canada Therefore, Toronto has MANY more Masjids than Calgary. Toronto has more than 125: http://www.salatomatic.com/lir.php?id=3 Calgary has only 8: http://www.salatomatic.com/lir.php?id=6 Toronto has many more Islamic Schools than Calgary. Also, I'm guessing that you are of Arabic background. Is that an Egyptian flag in your Avatar? There are many more people of Arabic background and Egyptian Muslims in Toronto than in Calgary. So, my advice would be to move to Toronto instead of Calgary. But, there are more engineering types of jobs and jobs in general in Alberta which is the province than in Toronto. So both the places have Muslims. Both the places are good but since having a job is important, than Calgary has more jobs than Toronto. Calgary is a city in the province of Alberta. If you really want to move to a city in Alberta, then I would advise your family to move to Edmonton instead of Calgary. Edmonton has a really good Masjid and an even better awesome Islamic School: Masjid: http://www.alrashidmosque.ca/index.php Masha Allah a really good looking Islamic School: http://www.islamicacademy.ca/site/photo_new_facility So once again, Toronto is better than Calgary but Edmonton is better than Calgary if you must move to Alberta. IMHO You mention about the crime rate. There is no need to worry. Our family has been living in Toronto since the last nearly 40 years and we know for sure that there is no need to worry about the crime rate of Toronto. Alhamdulillah, Canada is a very peaceful country as compared to other countries. Moving is one of the hardest things in life. I pray that may Allah make your move easy for you. After moving to Canada, please do not forget your Muslim identity and do not forget that you are a Muslim. |

Slm I personally was born and grew up in Toronto (am studying in India currently) so let me give u a first hand opinion. Toronto has a very large muslim population and since you said your brothers are young it would be the perfect place for them because of the scholars from around the world who visit the city constantly, and the youth programs that take place. There are also many Arab brothers and sisters who will be a great help for you. I come from the Gujarati community and I know they would love to help you as well. I am currently studying in India but have my whole family in Toronto please let me know if I can help you in any way.

Toronto has alot for muslims but personally i'de never be able to live there, i just find it very big and busy and everything's really far from everythingelse...like eteacher said, if you're going to Alberta see if you can go to Edmonton, i was born and lived there for quite a few years, amazing place, amazing people, close community...and very multicultural...I think you would enjoy it very much and i've heard the islamic school is very good there. Hope that helps. Umm H |

I need your help Canadian brothers and sisters! I live in Oakville, Ontario..which is near Toronto..about 15mins by car.. as already said we host a larger community..but overall I would prefer to live in a community where it is slightly newer as the older ways won't be as apparent..yes most ethnic groups stick to themselves which is a shame and I've been hearing from many sisters and brothers that out in Alberta(and British Columbia) that it is more of a collective effort regardless of ethnic groupings.. Also I hear the winter isn't as harsh as it can be in Alberta, in fact a sister posted about snow in Alberta already.. |

Asalam o Alaikum Brothers,
I moved to Canada almost two weeks ago, I was living in Scarborough near Masjid Abu Bakr then moved to Mississauga on friends advice as there are many job opportunities in here. Unfortunately, there is no masjid closer or my place or I don't know of. I have been trying to find even an odd job at a gas station but couldn't be lucky enough(may be 'coz of my beard) smiles... I request all of you brothers and sisters to make duwa for me and may Allah makes things easy for me in this country. Jazak'Allah, Kashif. Assalamu Alaikum, |

Assalamu alalikum,
Canada has good weather?! Which Canada do you live in Moulana? The weather is very bad no matter where you go. Employment opportunities are very bad in terms of wages and type of jobs and overall jobs in general. Compared to Toronto everywhere else the Islamic environment is not very good. |

in Calgary the weather can get really depressing in the winter as the days are extremely short and cold...and thus seasonal affective disorder usually kicks in with me note this effect will only be enhanced in more northern areas like edmonton. We have very few masajids (just one actually) in calgary but we have quite a few musallas. the difference being that the "mosque authorities" intend to sell the musallas thus they cannot be considered masjid and one cannot perform itikaf there. in calgary neither the main masjid nor the musalla have a full-time imam (for the last couple of years) rather they have imams who r usually only present at these locations to lead salah for juma, eid, taraweeh but not regularly In my opinion there is a huge lack of ulema here and you can really feel this wherever you go in the city, but alhamdulillah there is one alim who studied in darul uloom bufalo whom i have really benefited from. Calgary does have a thriving Egyptian community (mainly professionals, engineers, doctors, computer & tech people) and alhamdulillah typically anytime im praying salah at the university w/ jamat there will be egyptian brothers with me. and as said previously alberta is a place where one can find jobs with more ease, however it does seem to suffer from a lack of ulema and spiritually inclined people and communities as you would find in Vancouver or toronto. |

Asalam o Alaikum Brothers, Yes, I am very familiar with Mississauga but you would have to narrow it down..I network with many there and could perhaps point you in the right direction for a job khair insha'Allah ..give me a major intersection..there are well over 20 masjids within Mississauga..but when you are new to a area it is hard.. I'll check back in for your reply insha'Allah |
