i've been told that you have to fast the first one straight after Eid even if you are contemplating non-consecutive fasts in this month. Otherwise they are not allowed.

is this true?

No that's not true. You can keep it at anytime in Shawwal.

But,

It's better you start right after Eid because we are in the Fasting spirit. If we delay it, we get lazy and might miss the fasts.
