Default The crying Imam
Last night at my local masjid the imam that led Witri ended up crying all the way from start to end .

To be honest he just took away my concentration and I wonder what forum members think. I know Sudais also does this. Surely Ibada is very intimate and private moment between Muumeen and our creator (SW).

Any thoughts ?

They cry out of sincerity and Taqwa. Once I saw a Dua of Sheik Sudais with english translation. With the translation I understood the meaning and the depth of the Dua, I too became emotional. Allah has blessed them with piety and taqwa. The Sahabah used to cry often when thinking about Akhira even in public.

SubhanAllah.

Day before yesterday after the zikr majlis during dua' Mufti Ebrahim Desai Saheb just said one statement mentioning Roza of Nabi and burst into crying. Where will we get their ikhlaas. Seek from Allah that our eyes and hearts do not become so hard so as not to shed tears.

i find it very touching to see and hear ppl crying whilst in ibaadah, they cry out of love or fear for ALLAH TA'AALA - and not anything else.

I like when the Imam cry, it makes the musalles cry as well. This year our Imam cried in some verses in the 29th and 30th Juz. I love when Sudais cries. I dont know about crying for three full rakats, never experienced that one, usually the Imam recovers after repeating the verse about 3 times, or then definitely by the next rakat.

Asalamwalaikum,
I was always told that if one never cries in matters of deen it is a sign that the heart has gone hard. It's not that crying must be forced (that can easily become rihya), but if one starts to cry naturally, well that truly is a sign of taqwa.
We had katme-quran yesterday during tarawi. I almost cried, but unfortunately for me, everytime it almost happened i became conscious and stopped.... i.e. i still had that self awareness when if i was focussing so much on Allah swt alone i would have forgot where i was and cried without noticing.

The great Kaliph Hadrath Umar [may Allah be please within him] would frequently cry in leading Salaah which could be heard in the latter rows. Some described it as hysterical....

Last night I went for tahajud salah in jamat. The tilawah was so beautiful subhan Allah (and also frightening), the Imam cried profusely. Many of us in the jamat were crying too.

If a child can cry to it's mother out of want and need, then what stops us from shedding tears in front of the Lord of the heavens and the earth. There is nothing we can do without Him. If Allah closes His door to us, then where will we go? If He doesn't forgive us, then who will?
Surely our ibadah is meaningless if we pray in a mechanical and ritualistic way without our heart attached to our Rabb.

One of the poignant signs of Islam is how a grown man, even a courageous warrior, can humble himself and pour out his heart and cry in front of Allah. And there is no better example than this, but in the holy Messenger

Asalam Alaykum,

When the verses of the Most Merciful were recited to them, they fell in prostration and weeping. [Quran 19:58]

Imam An-Nawwawi rahimahullaah said: Crying when reading the Qur’an is a characteristic of those who know Allah (know Him through His names and Characteristics) and the feelings of the righteous.

Weeping of the Prophet (sallallahu alyhi wa salam) upon Quran recitation:

Abdullaah Ibn Mas’ood (Radhiallaahu Anhu) said that he was surprised when the Prophet (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam) asked him to read the Quraan to him. He believed that the Quraan came directly to the Prophet (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam) and thought that he did not need to hear it from somebody else. The Prophet (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam) comforted him, saying, ‘I love to listen to the Quraan read by somebody else.’ So he read from chapter an-Nisaa. When he recited the verse, ‘How will it be then, when we bring from each nation a witness and we bring you (Muhammad) as a witness against your people’, he saw tears streaming from the Prophet’s (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam) eyes.

(Bukhaari)

`Abdullah bin Ash-Shikhkhir (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: I came to Messenger of Allah (PBUH) when he was performing prayers. He was sobbing and his chest sounded like a boiling kettle.
[Abu Dawud and At-Tirmidhi] .

Weeping of AbuBakr RadiaAllahu anhu upon reciting the Quran:

Ibn `Umar (May Allah be pleased with them) reported: When the illness of Messenger of Allah (PBUH) became serious, he was asked about the leading of Salat and he said, “Ask Abu Bakr to lead Salat.” Whereupon, `Aishah (May Allah be pleased with her) said; “Abu Bakr is very tender hearted. He is bound to be overcome by weeping when he recites the Qur’an.” Messenger of Allah (PBUH) repeated, “Ask him (Abu Bakr) to lead Salat”.
In another narration: `Aishah (May Allah be pleased with her) said: “When Abu Bakr stands in your place, he will not be able to recite the Noble Qur’an to the people on account of weeping.”
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].
