Is it bad to have a favourite verse/surah?
Is there any evidence that Muhammad liked a particular verse/surah.

Different suras have different virtues mentioned by the prophet peace be upon him.

About Surah 112:

Al-Bukhaari (6643) narrated from Abu Sa’eed that a man heard another man reciting Qul Huwa Allaahu Ahad and repeating it. The next morning he came to the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and told him about that. The man thought that it was too little, but the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “By the One in Whose hand is my soul, it is equivalent to one-third of the Qur’aan.”

Also, referring to Surah 112, It was narrated from Qutaadah ibn al-Nu’maan (may Allaah be pleased with him) who said that a man stayed up to worship Allaah at the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) just before dawn and recited “Qul huwa Allaahu ahad,” but did not recite anything else. In the morning, the man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and told him about this, thinking that perhaps he was not doing enough. The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “By the One in Whose hand is my soul, it is equivalent to one-third of the Qur’aan.” (al-Bukhaari, 4627).

Regarding the verse 2:255 known as "Al Kursi" :

Also, it was narrated from Ubayy, i.e., Ubayy ibn Ka’b that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) asked him which aayah in the Book of Allaah was the greatest. He said, “Allaah and His Messenger know best.” He repeated it several times, then he said, “Aayat al-Kursiy.” The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, “Congratulations upon your knowledge O Abu’l-Mundhir. By the One in Whose hand is my soul, it has a tongue and two lips, and it glorifies the Sovereign (i.e., Allaah) at the foot of the Throne.”

Also, regarding the first Surah in the Qur'aan, Al Faatihah :

-Tirmidhee reports from Abu Hurayrah (RA) who said that the Messenger of Allaah (SAW) said, [The chapter commencing with], “all praises and thanks are due to Allaah the Lord of the Universe” is the Mother of the Qur`aan, the Mother of the Book, the Seven Oft Repeated Verses and the Great Qur`aan. [i.e. Ummul Qur`aan, Ummul Kitaab, Sab`ul Mathaanee and al-Qur`aanul Adheem. Reported by at-Tirmidhee [no. 3344] and it is saheeh as stated by al-Albaanee in ‘Saheeh Sunan at-Tirmidhee’ [no. 2498].]

Also :

Muslim reports from Abu Hurayrah (RA) who said that the Messenger of Allaah (SAW) said,

Allaah, the Glorious and Exalted said, “I have divided the prayer between Myself and my servant equally and My servant shall be granted what he asked for.” Therefore when the servant says, ‘all praises and thanks are due to Allaah, the Lord of the universe’, Allaah says, ‘My servant has praised Me.’ When he says, ‘the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful,’ Allaah says, ‘My servant has extolled Me.’ When he says, ‘Master of the Day of Judgement,’ Allaah says, ‘My servant has glorified Me.’ When he says, ‘You Alone we worship and Your aid Alone do we seek,’ Allaah says, ‘this is between Me and My servant and My servant shall have what he requested.’ When he says, ‘guide us to the Straight Path, the Path of those whom You have favoured, not of those who have incurred [Your] wrath, neither of those who have gone astray,’ Allaah says, ‘this is for My servant and My servant shall have what he asked for.’ [Saheeh Muslim ]

If one likes a certain verse or surah and finds it brings him comfort or he likes to ponder the meaning of it theres nothing wrong with this.

Now I am thinking, maybe I should recite al-Fatihah before making any du'a...

My favourite surah is surah Duha... it's kind of personal.

Asalamwalaikum,

My mother loves that surah as well. When we were discussing that surah yesterday she actually broke down in tears. That is the beauty of the Quran, it speaks to all of us personally. In the brief time i've been practicing the first Surah which struck me profoundly was Ar-Rahman. I could not stop thinking about it, listening to recitations or reading it. More recently it's been Al-Asr. I keep on thinking about the 4 conditions that the surah lays down. As time goes on, Allah swt will certainly make different surahs affect me more. It doesn't negate the beauty of any other surah, it just makes true the miracle that the Quran really is there to guide us and it displays this miracle every time we ponder on it.
