You can do some tweaking in your profile here at SF and then the link to your blog will start appearing when we click on your userid that comes with every post. For example click on my userid then click view home page.

I do not read novels any more. Not even Ibn-e-Safi, BA. I can not. But it is nice that you have warned about it. If we prepare a down list then we shall begin with:
Down
(1) Tom Clancy
(2) Wilbur Smith
(3) Leon Uris
(4) Chronicles of Narnia
After liquidation of USSR (no USA did not do that, we did ) it is natural that the west will look for a new punching bag for their ire in fiction books. Extra terrestrials can not serve for long. So the choice had to fall on poor Muslims, sooner or later. May Allah protect us. These things have to be tackled on urgent basis. I hope we make our voice heard.

Don't forget the various "classics" which have this kind of stuff in them as well, like the Divine Comedy, for example.

One more notorious name would be that of Leon Uris, the author of "Hajj".

After reading Dubai by the same idiot I do not have any appetite to read Leon Uris. But thanks-you confirmed my fears.

Uris was a Zionist Jew. He died in 2003.

I never thought I could leave novels. I guess that's the barkat of islaahi ta'alluq.

I do think however that for kids/teens there should be Islamic novels. "The Adventures of 'Eesaa at Sea" or something like that.

It's always easier to write male character as the lead than a female though, if you want the story to be completely shari'ah compliant. Or maybe my tastes in stories are more old style adventure with swords and bad guys, rather than contemporary everyday sort of thing.

Ooh I read The Haj. Is was about how dumb and lazy the slovenly arabs were, and how the hardworking, straight-backed jews came in and fixed up Palestine.

Now I'm the kind of person who likes to give people the benefit of the doubt, often to absurd degrees, but that's pushing it!

Propaganda aside, the story was mediocre but alright. It'd be nice to have some muslim authors out there. Stuff like this can really color a person's perception in ways they might not even understand, especially in the formative years. A person reads this book in their teens or 20s and for the rest of their life they are staunchly pro-Israel and they don't even know why.

Narrated Al-Walid bin 'Aizar:

I heard Abi Amr 'Ash-Shaibani saying, "The owner of this house." he pointed to 'Abdullah's house, "said, 'I asked the Prophet 'Which deed is loved most by Allah?" He replied, 'To offer prayers at their early (very first) stated times.' " 'Abdullah asked, "What is the next (in goodness)?" The Prophet said, "To be good and dutiful to one's parents," 'Abdullah asked, "What is the next (in goodness)?" The Prophet said, To participate in Jihad for Allah's Cause." 'Abdullah added, "The Prophet narrated to me these three things, and if I had asked more, he would have told me more."
(Bukhari :: Book 8 :: Volume 73 :: Hadith 1)

Ive never read this series, but I think I saw the movie - aside from the vague christian imagery (you only see it if your looking for it) - what does the book say that is insulting to Muslims or Islam?

i've read many of the novels in the series and also read j.r.r. tolkien's "the lord of the rings". both of these series to my limited understanding did not target islam. but rather arabs and turks especially. this is evident from the way that more evil nations, who are obsessed with slavery (which is how orientalists portray our forefathers btw), are dark skinned, ride camels or elephants and wear turbans and have curved arabian style swords. in short these books are somewhat racist but not so much anti-islamic, at least it seems that way. but then again that type of attitude/sentiment would be expected in the post WWI and WWII era when these books were written.

Perhaps the libraries should be petitioned so we can burn them all?

^uncalled for comment. Who's talking anywhere about destroying anything. It's our right if we don't want to read certain books, or think refraining from reading certain things is best. Just like how Religion is not allowed to be talked about in many schools, except that is enforced; we're not forcing anyone here.

Besides many books portray things that are plain wrong, and act as if Islam is like that. My friend is in high school and for school had to read a book called Palace Walk (Baynal Qasrain in Arabic). She was furious. I decided to understand why, and just by reading it's summary I was very put off; it was totally misrepresenting what a Normal Muslim family would be like.

As for Chronicles of Narnia, the Calormene folks look like a mix between Arabs/Persians/Turkish, as br Hafiz Gee mentioned. Stereotypical things were attached to them, even that they are very eloquent with poetry. If some adult wants to read it purely for English, then I supposed it would be okay. But I wouldn't give it to my child to read.

The racist bias is pointed out here too.

Now if we combine above racist attitude with the layman perception Arab=Muslim, see here for example, then the circle is really complete. No?

I think for now we should content ourselves with making sure our children and others stay away from such books.

Exactly, we need some talented Muslim authors out there who write within the ambit of the Shariah.
