5 stages of acquiring knowledge:
1. Istimaa' (Listening Attentively):
2. Insaat (silence, pondering):
3. Hifz (remembering or memorizing):
4. 'Amal (practice):
5. Nashr (preaching and imparting):


Most of us do half of the 1st stage (ie. just listening, not attentively), skip the rest and go directly to stage 5(preaching). Sigh.

For most of us, there is a sixth stage also. We start SWEARING if attention is not paid to us.

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, "He who calls others to follow the Right Guidance will have a reward equal to the reward of those who follow him, without their reward being diminished in any respect on that account.''
