![]() It is prohibited for both men and women to cut/trim their eyebrows. At most, one may only remove the stray strands of the eyebrows. قالت والله لقد قرأت ما بين اللوحين فما وجدته قال والله لئن قرأتيه لقد وجدتيه { وما آتاكم الرسول فخذوه وما نهاكم عنه فانتهوا } (صحيح البخاري، 7/ 83، دار الفكر) “Abdullāh cursed those women who practiced tattooing and those who removed hair from their faces and those who created spaces between their teeth artificially to look beautiful, such ladies have changed what Allāh has created. Um Ya'qūb said, "What is that?" 'Abdullāh said, "Why should I not curse those who were cursed by Allāh's Messenger and are referred to in Allāh's Book?" She said to him "By Allāh, I have read the whole Qur'ān but I have not found such a thing. 'Abdullāh said, "By Allāh, if you had read it (carefully) you would have found it. (Allāh says ![]() The above Hadeeth refer to those who remove or shape the eyebrows merely for cosmetic reasons. Taken from Askimam.org |

Some fiqhī texts state that it is permissible to remove the hair of the eyebrows as long as it does not resemble the hermaphrodites. However, other jurist explaining the text write that this is only when a person appears disfigured by his eyebrows e.g., the hairs of the eyebrows are too long and cover the eyes. For such a person, it will be permissible to cut his eyebrows to make it look it appropriate.
Nevertheless, the shaping and removing of the eyebrows in normal circumstances is not permissible. Allamah Nawawi mentions that if a woman has facial hairs which resemble a man, then it is mustahab for her to remove those hairs. |

Its not allowed. Plucking eyebrows is called Namass. It used to be done mostly by women.
The hadeeth which says that the woman who plucks the eyebrows or who has that done is cursed was narrated by al-Bukhaari (4886) and Muslim (2125), from the hadeeth of ‘Abd-Allaah ibn Mas’ood raa. Theres another hadeeth on it too I think. Also the wording indicates that this is a practice of women directing the words to them. As its not really expected from men. Many women because of this basically color eyebrows in a certain way, making them look plucked while they are not. Im not sure how it works exactly but thats the basic idea behind it. |

Question
I know that it is Haram for a female to pluck her eyebrows, although there is 1 Hadith which states that she can do so for her husband. However, I have heard that if a female suffers from poor self-esteem, low self-confidence, and hates her appearance, due to the way her unplucked eyebrows change her appearance, it may be permissible for her to pluck them. I would just like to check whether there is a Hadith to support this, or if any of the schools of thought have mentioned something on this matter. Answer Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the World; and may His blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions. Plucking eyebrows is strictly forbidden due to the curse mentioned in the Hadith for the one who practices it or helps someone else in this act. It is narrated in al-Sahiheen from Ibn Masoud that he said: "Allah curses those ladies who practice tattooing and those who get themselves tattooed, and those ladies who remove the hair from their faces and those who make artificial spaces between their teeth in order to look more beautiful whereby they change Allah's creation" . We do not know any Hadith that permits a woman to take from her eyebrows. All the Muslim scholars agreed that plucking eyebrows is forbidden for unmarried women. They have disagreement concerning a married woman if her husband permits her. It is also a matter of disagreement among scholars whether the prohibition applies to shaving or plucking. The most preponderant opinion is that shaving, plucking, etc., are all forbidden for every woman regardless of whether she is married or not. The reason for this prohibition is the changing of the creation of Allah and that includes plucking, shaving etc. Also, the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) did not make any exemption for the married women. The above saying reached a lady from Bani Asad called Um Yaqub who came (to Abdullah ) and said, "But I see your wife doing these things?' He said, 'Go and look at her'. She went and looked at her but could not see anything in support of her statement. On that he said, 'If my wife was as you thought, I would not keep her in my company" . Imam Nawawi said that 'The majority of Muslim scholars believe that Ibn Masoud meant that if his wife had done such an act he will never keep her in his company and never live together with her; instead he would divorce her and separate from her' . Ibn Masoud did not tell her that such an act is permissible for a married woman. There is no narration from any companion that approves plucking or taking eyebrows except the narration from Ayisha (Radiya Allahu Anha) that a woman asked her, "O mother of believers! I have hair on my face, is it ok to pluck it to beautify myself for my husband? Ayisha said: 'Remove the harm from you and make up yourself for your husband as you do at the time of visiting" [ Ibn Abder Razzaq reported in al-Musannaf]. If the above narration is proved, it means only the hair that is not from eyebrows as confirmed by a group of scholars since it is permissible, even likeable, for a woman to remove a beard or mustache growing on her face. Finally, we advise you to fear Allah and to keep away from being under the severe threat, i.e. the curse of Allah. Allah knows best. ==================== Some women go to beauticians who style their eyebrows by shaving or trimming their edges. What is the ruling on this? Praise be to Allaah. Shaping the eyebrows by trimming, shaving or plucking their edges in order to appear beautiful, as is done by some women nowadays, is haraam because it involves changing the creation of Allaah and following the Shaytaan in his tempting of mankind to change the creation of Allaah. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): “Verily! Allaah forgives not (the sin of) setting up partners in worship with Him, but He forgives whom He pleases sins other than that, and whoever sets up partners in worship with Allaah, has indeed strayed far away. They (all those who worship others than Allaah) invoke nothing but female deities besides Him, and they invoke nothing but Shaytaan, a persistent rebel! Allaah cursed him. And he [Shaytaan] said: ‘I will take an appointed portion of Your slaves; Verily, I will mislead them, and surely, I will arouse in them false desires; and certainly, I will order them to slit the ears of cattle, and indeed I will order them to change the nature created by Allaah.’ And whoever takes Shaytaan as a wali (protector or helper) instead of Allaah, has surely suffered a manifest loss.” [Al-Nisa’ 4:116-119] In al-Saheeh, it was reported that Ibn Mas’ood (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: “Allaah has cursed the women who do tattoos and those who have this done, the women who pluck eyebrows and those who have this done, and the women who file their teeth and change the creation of Allaah.” Then he said: “Should I not curse those whom the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) cursed, when it says in the Qur’aan (interpretation of the meaning): ‘… And whatsoever the Messenger gives you, take it, and whatever he forbids you, abstain (from it)…’ [al-Hashr 59:7]” Fataawa al-Lajnah al-Daa’imah (The Permanent Committee for Islamic Research and Fataawa ) , 5/179 |

The Prophet (pbuh) had cursed the women who tattoo and pluck their eyebrows. Men have been given permission to trim their beard of whatever is in excess of a fist length. If you meant by shaping their beard hair (i.e. by shaving) then this is not permissible also. As a Muslim we endeavour to follow the Prophet (pbuh) in all facets of life. He is our role model and we like to form our 'fashion' from Him (pbuh). |

There are many millions of muslim men who spend a lot of time trimming and shaving there beard much longer than a fist lenght, even more are clean shaven like my husband. Do they choose not to follow the teachings or do they not know? Are they cursed? Then you will know what they are doing is wrong. And yes they will be cursed. They choose not to follow because of their inner desires or pressures from outside. May Allah give everyone Hidayah and keep us on the straight path. |

Alhamdulillah for that link Brother Taliban, it was helpful. Just one question though, I understand the fistful under the chin, but what about the jawline?
I have seen men with "box" beards where the hair under the chin is one/two fists long with the hair on the jawline grown longer to meet the hair below the chin. To what extent are we permitted to cut the hair on the jawline? Should we make a fist under the jawline too and cut whatever is below like we would do with the chin? |

Outside pressures like what society tells us looks good or doesnt look good. Many young men dont like to keep beards because they feel they dont look good with a beard
and look much better without one. Others see shaping the beard as fashionable such as rastors (I think think is colloquial though, rasot is like a very very thin beard) or goatees etc. Others view beards as dirty and barbaric and the sign of unkempt men, all of these views are usually influenced from society. |
