Asalamualaikum.
I personally know many students of Shaykh Husain Abdul Sattar, and as far as I know he doesn't immediately give bayat to anyone. However, it is very easy to establish a connection with him. Just email him. However, don't expect to take bayat with him anytime soon. It seems as though he wants to see how dedicated a student is before he allows them to take bayat. However, I have to say he is a superb Shaykh. His student's are quite amazing. He is also held in high regard with the Ulema in Chicago (where he currently resides). |

السلام عليكم و رحمة الله و بركاته
IMHO becoming bay'at to a shaykh online should be done only if you have previously met the shaykh and feel there is compatibility (munaasabat) with him, and you have a reasonable degree of confidence that your islah will be made through him. This compatibility is not something that can be gauged by listening to his talks only, or from what others have to say of him. Therefore, becoming bay'at to a shaykh, simply because he is available for online bay'at is IMHO not a good idea, even if he happens to be a well recognized sincere and true shaykh. You should first take time to meet a few mashaikh, sit in their majalis and then decide to whom you should become bay'at. Please forgive me if this sounds a bit harsh, but we need to understand that the righteous and pious of the past, in spite of the lack of modern facilities we enjoy today, set aside time to stay by the mashaikh and get benefit. We have no other way other follow their path. Also, it is not necessary to become bay'at to a very popular shaykh, or the greatest shaykh on earth. As long as he is a truly pious servant of Allah, and your temperemant agrees with that of his, and you are sincere in your desire for your islah, you will benefit, because the true source of all benefit is Allah Ta'ala alone, and the shaykh is the means towards this benefit. Having said that, my personal experience has been that I met my shaykh when he visited my country. However, I contemplated bay'at only later on (after he had left), and when I contacted him via email, he accepted my bay'at. However, I was instructed to come to his khanqa and spend a few days in Ramadhan (this was inspite of the fact that my shaykh is several thousand miles away from where I am) Alhamdulillah, Allah made it possible for me to comply with this intsruction last year and it was a very beneficial experience. This year too, I am making preparations to spend the last 10 days of Ramadhan there. As for correspondense, I contact my shaykh via email almost weekly, and replies are sent within 2-3 days. If you are interested insha Allah more information can be given. |

asalamualaycum, ![]() Bay't is not important. Stick to Islahi Talluk first. Choose a Shaikh. Test him, check him. See if he's strict on Sunnah. Ask for advices. Tell him your sins see what cure he gives you and if it suits you or not. Then decide. DON'T DO BAY'T QUICKLY WITH ANYONE! |

Allah said in the Holy Qur'an, "Fear God and accompany Trustworthy people" [9:119]. Allah's Word is for all time, for every era and for every century. It is an ongoing order, from which we understand the importance of keeping company with the Trustworthy. Allah orders all human beings to accompany them, because by keeping their company one will see how they live their lives, how they deal with people, how they address their companions, how they eat, how they sleep, how they worship. By accompanying them, one will learn all their good manners, and their ways of life.
Another way too understand this verse, is that one should accompany a trustworthy person, because to be trustworthy is very rare and not many people achieve it. Everyone, however, can find a trustworthy person and accompany him, in order to be guided. Following a Trustworthy One is essential to our spiritual path. Such a one is needed to lead us and guide us and to be a beacon for us on that way. In the Naqshbandi Order, the living presence of a connected shaikh is essential. Through his physical and spiritual linkage to the Prophet (sallallahu alaih wasallam) he establishes the murid's connection. The murid's obligation is to maintain his connection to his shaikh, to hold tightly to the hand of the one within his reach. The shaikh maintains the further connection to the previous shaikhs and to the Prophet (sallallahu alaih wasallam). From what has been said above, and in the biographies of the Masters, the importance of accompanying a True Master has been clearly demonstrated. It provides the seeker with the opportunity to learn the essentials of ethics and good conduct, to discover the hidden defects of his heart, and to be lifted to the states of perfection. There are two requisites for entering upon such an endeavor: when the seeker feels the need to seek in this way he must purify his intention and ask his Lord to connect him to a Truthful One; and he must look in his own country for someone who will point him in the direction of the Perfect Master. The Need for a Living Guide If one is separated from his shaikh by death or other circumstances, it becomes necessary to find a living guide, who can complete the work of the first master. The path itself is not the Goal, but the means to reach the Goal. Holding onto the attachment to a master who is no longer present, usually represents an unrealistic expectation and a false hope. It may also be a manifestation of pride. Although they had already pledged themselves to the Prophet (sallallahu alaih wasallam), the Companions had to take initiation with Sayyidina Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) after the passing of the Prophet (sallallahu alaih wasallam), and as they renewed their pledge to the successive khalifs, Sayyidina 'Umar (radi Allahu anhu), Sayyidina 'Uthman (radi Allahu anhu) and Sayyidina 'Ali (radi Allahu anhu), so too does a sincere seeker need to put his hand into the hand of a living shaikh, and renew his initiation, in order to complete his journey to the Divine Presence. |

The sudden demise of a leading, renowned and well-respected Durban Scholar and Cleric, Moulana Yunus Patel on a pilgrimage journey in the holy city of Makkah has plunged the community in deep grief and sorrow. Aged 65, Moulana Patel (1946-2011) is survived by his widow, two daughters, a son and their spouses and children.
He was a dedicated, selfless, community service-orientated person, who stayed up till the late hours of the night, almost everyday of his life to render assistance to all who called upon him. Never was any person turned away from his door. In the recent years, despite suffering a series of heart attacks and the resulting impact on his health, he continued serving the community and humanity without any consideration for his own wellbeing. He was a much-sought-after-person in the community, in his capacity as a social counselor, especially for solving marital problems, youth-related problems, family disputes, depression and the like. Imam (Prayer leader) of the Masjid-un-Nur (Mosque Congregation) in Asherville, Durban with a magnetic appeal, he was very moderate and balanced. Open hearted towards all and sundry, Moulana Patel will be sorely missed by the thousands whose lives he had touched. Moulana Patel served the Jamiatul Ulama KZN (Council of Muslim Theologians) in various positions over several decades. He served as the President of the Council for a number of years and resigned due to ill-health towards the latter part of his life. He was particularly passionate about providing guidance to the community on living a life based on morality, ethics, justice, honesty, mercy and kindness towards one and all. He emphasised the great importance of compassionate and loving treatment of husbands towards their wives and advocated strongly the importance of the family unit. He travelled extensively around the country and to many parts of the world - USA, UK, France, Mauritius, Reunion, Kenya, Bangladesh, Saudi Arabia and neighbouring states to preach and advocate this very message, where his message was well received and greatly appreciated. His was a familiar voice on numerous radio stations - the local Radio Al-Ansaar, Channel Islam International & Radio Islam International among others. Through his popular radio programs as well as audio-streaming from his very popular website, he was able to touch the lives of thousands of people nationally and internationally. Indeed, immediately upon his demise, messages of condolences began pouring in from around the world from thousands who mourn the demise of a person who was so well-loved and respected. He was a man who lived by his words, and practiced what he preached. He lead a verysimple, frugal life. He was an embodiment of humility, selflessness, generosity, mercy, kindness and concern for others. He was extremely accessible for the most ordinary of people at all times. He dedicated many years of his life towards education, which was a burning passion of his life. Moulana Patel established a girl’s school as well as a boy’s school in his community where hundreds of learners have studied and continue to do so. Besides this, he was regarded as a patron and a spiritual guide to scores of organisations, institutions and societies. He was also the author of numerous books and his book titled “Kick the habit” is very popular in motivating drug addicts to give up drugging, alcoholics to give up drinking, gamblers to give up gambling and smokers to give up smoking. His very popular website www.yunuspatel.co.za is a wealth of information on moral and spiritual upliftment. Through his extensive travels and services, he put Durban on the map. The city of Durban and the country at large will be poorer at the loss of a person who advocated the principles of good citizenship and peaceful co-existence between communities in almost every talk, lecture and sermon that he delivered. His demise has indeed left a deep void that will be difficult to fill. We take this opportunity to extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, associates and congregation in their moment of grief and bereavement. May the Almighty continue to bless his soul and shower him with divine mercy, love and benediction. |
