Default Sisters and long abayas
I've noticed that some of the longer garments tend to drag across the floor. Sisters go out wearing that and who knows what kind of dirt may be lingering on the floor that they walk on. It's possible that it could make their clothes dirty and unfit for salah?

Brother, if you don't have a wife or sister who does this who you can ask, then why does this concern you?
If you don't buy abaya for the women in your life, then why raise this issue about which women most certainly know and deal with?

No offense, but when I first read your post I thought why you should be concerned about issues which don't concern you?
Why take on more responsibility by delving into this when there are multitudes of issues which do concern you which need all of our attention?

Assuming you are not married, insha Allah you will marry soon to a good Muslim woman and you will soon find out more about Muslim women and their needs and circumstances.

Ramadan Mubarak!!!!

The reason I created this thread was primarily to raise awareness. There are a number of sisters and even brothers who walk arond wearing long flowing garments.

Maybe they simply don't realise what they are inadvertently doing. For example, such clothes would most certainly end up touching the ground when one answers the call of nature.

As we know, cleanliness is an extremely important facet of deen.

السلام عليكم

You're lucky if the Sisters in your town wear long Abayas, the sisters in my city wear a headscarf and some tight colourful clothing which pretty much defeats the purpose of Hijab... it has the opposing effect if you ask me.

Narrated Umm Salamah, Ummul Mu'minin: The slave-mother of Ibrahim ibn AbdurRahman ibn Awf asked Umm Salamah, the wife of the Prophet (peace_be_upon_him): I am a woman having a long border of clothe and I walk in filthy place; (then what should I do?). Umm Salamah replied: The Apostle of Allah ( peace be upon him) said: What comes after it cleanses it.

Sunan Abu Dawud

Can one of the learned people please explain this hadith

i appreciate your concern, not every place is clean,i myself had seen many women dragging their abayas and the bottom is so dirty and muddy it looks disgusting at times, and i feel even more disgusted when i see them praying with it!

I agree. The urban ground has a lot of filth. In the desert, only sand. So you have a valid point.
assalamualaikum,

macca and medina were not desert. they were towns with streets where animals walked and animal waste was found as well.

A womans long garments that may drag on the streets do not become unclean just by dragging on the dirt in the ground.
JazakAllah Khayr. I appreciate that certainty doesn't get removed by doubt. So even though there might be a plethora of dirt gathered at the bottom of an abaya, it might not be considered najis in the sense it breaks salah.

However, shouldn't we make sure our clothes don't accumulate dirt in any case?

Even if argued from a non-Islamic perspective, doesn't it just seem like common-sense to not walk with long flowing garments that can drag and catch mud and all sorts of other dirt?

Can someone please also explain the hadith posted?
