Dear Brothers & Sisters, Assalaamoalaikum
I came across an article on "half-widows" on al-jazeera site, viz. http://english.aljazeera.net/news/as...833227686.html that deals with the problems faced by women in Kashmir, women whose husbands have diasppeared for quite some time now. One of the problems concerns remarriage of such women according to Islamic Law: Adding to the confusion is the continued dispute over what is the minimum time needed to dissolve a marriage and allow a "half-widow" to move on with her life and possibly remarry according to Islamic law. One school suggests four to seven years, but others suggest that a "half-widow" is expected to wait up to 90 years before remarrying. Could anyone provide any relevant information addressing the issue of the time after which a woman may remarry after non-return of her husband (no disappearance involved), and in the case of her husband having disapppeared in rather prevailing troubled conditions as in Kasmir? Letr us please stick to the issue mentioned above, and let us not discuss the Kashmir problem itself. Jazakallah Khair Brotherly yours farook |
