Default Weekend Islamic schools: Reforms to get the most out of them?
As salaamu alaykum.

What kind of reforms, improvements, etc. do you guys feel is needed for young Muslims to get the most out of the "Weekend School" programs offered at most Masjids in North America?

Currently, about all children learn is how to say the Arabic alphabet and, occasionally, how to recite the Quran. Aside from that, little else is learned and the same material is repeated again and again. This surely needs to change as these programs are often the only access children have to Islamic education especially areas without enough Ulema and funds to set up "Maktab" systems.

So when answering the main question of this post, keep the following points in mind:

What should the goals of the program be? What should the curriculum look like? How should courses be structured?

When answering, please also answer the question posed rather than extolling the necessity/virtues of a more traditional "Maktab" system of which most are already convinced.

Jazakallahu Khair.

Wa'salaam.
