Assalamu Alaikum Wa rahmatullah,
I came across the following video recently. Seems like it was created by a Shia but basically it shows Sunni Ulema raising objections to some of the things written by Allamah Ibn Taymiya (RA) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wK61w3M3uVQ My purpose in posting this is not to start another sufi-salafi debate or to cause fitna. My question is, how authentic are these things that are being attributed to Shaykh Ibn Taymiya? Wassalam |

Jazak Allah bro. But that is the very reason I asked. I didn't take the video at phase value as I know certain people take it too far when talking against salafis and Shyakh Ibn Taymiyya. And obviously whoever uploaded it had a clear goal in mind.
But since the person is quoting texts, I wanted to know if these things were indeed written in these books and whether these books were attributed to Shaykh Ibn Taymiyya. NB: the quote about 4:43 being revealed for Ali (RA) - I believe that is the mainstream view (as per Ibn Kathir/Ma'ariful Quran etc.) so I didn't take his word for it. In addition, the video continues to a different interview at 06:32.. I don't know who the Shuyukh are in the interview but they "look" mainstream if that makes sense. So please have a look at that as well inshaAllah. |

Seems like Ibn Hajar's (RA) al-durar al-kaamina fi a`yaan al-mi'at al-thaamina does contain the comments being read out by the Shaykh in the interview.

Sidi,
I cannot vouch for the reliability in representation of the words found in the books (as in the context etc). But Ibn Taymiyah's Nasibi leanings are known and they were mentioned by Al-Hafidh Ibn Hajar Al-Asqalani (rah) as well. As for the supposed Shirk allegations of the Sahaba (ra), i think it can be assumed that these 'ulama declared the reports false before calling the Sahaba mushrikeen. Let's hope so at least. waLlahu a'lam |

Jazak Allah Khair. In a complete U-turn, I am going to ask los moderadores to close the thread.
To be honest, who cares what happened in the past? Shaykh Ibn Taymiya (RA) contributed more to the deen than any of us ever will and he returned to His Lord with his deeds. He was not infallible and it is possible he erred in some of his opinions and judgements. Besides, we won't be asked in the grave: "Was Ibn Taymiya wrong or not?" Those are a people who have passed away; theirs was what they did, and yours is what you do; and you will not be questioned about their actions. [2:134] Our Lord! Forgive us, and our brethren who came before us into the Faith, and leave not, in our hearts, rancour against those who have believed. [59:10] Assalamu Alaikum |
