Default Questions regarding dhikr and what are minor sins?
Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, "He who utters a hundred times in a day these words: `La ilaha illallahu, wahdahu la sharika lahu, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamdu, wa Huwa `ala kulli sha'in Qadir (there is no true god except Allah. He is One and He has no partner with Him; His is the sovereignty and His is the praise, and He is Omnipotent),' he will have a reward equivalent to that for emancipating ten slaves, a hundred good deeds will be recorded to his credit, hundred of his sins will be blotted out from his scroll, and he will be safeguarded against the devil on that day till the evening; and no one will exceed him in doing more excellent good deeds except someone who has recited these words more often than him. And he who utters: `Subhan-Allahi wa bihamdihi (Allah is free from imperfection and His is the praise)' one hundred times a day, his sins will be obliterated even if they are equal to the extent of the foam of the ocean.''
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

Please read the hadith. now i want to ask something that most of us might take for granted but i was confused about:
- what constitutes an islamic 'day'?...the Prophet (PBUH) said that these adhkar are to be recited hundred times a day. did he mean from maghrib to maghrib?or time after isha on one night to time before isha the next night? and do we lose the virtue of these adhkar if we are unable to make the full hundred in one 'day'...?
how strict are the islamic rules regarding this or can i just take the 'day' as whatsoever pleases me?

- in riyadh us saliheen it is mentioned:
"Here sins mean minor sins and those which do not relate to the rights of people"
so my question is what constitutes 'minor' sins?a list would be helpful.

Jazak Allah khair

There are two answers to your question.

  1. Where Allah (SWT) & His Rasool has left the matter open for you you shouldn't ask for restrictions.

    • [5:101] O you who believe, do not ask about things which, if disclosed, would displease you. If you ask about them while the Qur‗an is being revealed, they will be disclosed to you. Allah has pardoned you for it. Allah is Most-Forgiving, Forbearing.
    • [5:102] People before you asked such questions, and then, as a result, became disbelievers.
  2. Other Ahadeeth and verses talk about the superiority of Dhik'r before sunrise and & sunset So you can apply this if you wish.
    • [20:130] So, (O messenger,) endure with patience what they say, and proclaim the purity and praise of your Lord before sunrise and before sunset. And in some hours of night, proclaim His purity, and at points of the day as well, so that you may be pleased.

1) It all depends on you when you want to start a day. After Fajr would be the best. For making it easy, do it once in 24 hours.

2) Here is a list of Major Sins. Sins other than this are minor.

BUT...

If you make a habit of doing a minor sin it might become a MAJOR SIN.

that is a very good answer. Jazak Allah khair

The day starts from Magrib to next Magrib. So Islamically speaking Friday night means Thursday night. Friday starts from Magrib of Thursday and ends at Magrib of Friday.
