Imam Abu Hamid al-Ghazali says in his 'Ijam al-Awam 'an ilm ul-kalam' translated by Shaykh Abdullah Ali under the title "A Return to Purity in Creed'

"Know that the unequivocal truth, over which there is no dispute between those possessing inner discernment, is the approach of the Salaf-meaning the approach of the Companions and Successors."

May Allah guide us and enlighten us with this approach!

Sh. Akram Nadwi mentioned that the early mutakalimun intiatly started of to defend the Creed of the Salaf by refuting the mu'tazilah. But later when mu'tazilah had become almost extinct, then they turned and actually began attacking the appoach of the Salaf.
