Default Question about choosing a madhab
As salamu alaikum wr wb,

I know this topic was brought up hundreds of times but I didn't find one that addressed this (feel free to answer or post a link to a thread that already answered this question).

I haven't chosen a madhab, but most of my teachers and community are Hanafi, and I find it to be the school of thought that I have the most knowledge about and the easiest access to. However there are somethings that are given in this madhab that I do not do, but I do it the way that is taught in a different madhab (things such as witr prayer, how and when to point/move the finger in salah), can I still say that I follow the Hanafi madhab if a couple things I do are done in the manner of another madhab? or do I have to change those two things things and do them according to the Hanafi fiq if its the one that I primarily want to follow?

jazakallah khair

Wa ´Alaykum As-Salam wa RahmatuLlahi wa Barakatuhu,

Inshaa Allah that is fine. But it might not be very popular on this website

Really? I haven't noticed.

I guess Im not going to choose one, as long as it is not mandatory. Honestly I know that none of the 4 Imams is better than the other and they are all considered right, but I find that I prefer some things over others, and If I were to choose one, then I would probably be guilty of "mixing and matching". Maybe years in the future when I have way more knowledge if Allah wills, then I will choose one inshallah, but right now I think Ill just learn about each one and leave it at that

When doing things in Deen, it's best to do it fully with Ihsaan (excellence). So if you decided to take on Hanafi Fiqh, why not make minor changes and practice in is entirety? The only thing you'll have to learn differently (mind you it's just a little difference not entirely different) is the wir salah (which consist of three raka'at, qunut, and one salam). The difference in movement of the finger in tashahhud is very superficial so you shouldn't worry about it too much.

I would suggest you to stick to one Madhhab in every issue.
A lot of scholars deem it wajib (i.e. necessary) to follow one and only one school, and this is the less confusing thing to do: after you start properly following one school, dozens of doubts (how should I perform this? how can I choose?, etc.) will be erased.
