Yeah, it smells bad. It tastes bad too. But if you compare it to using baking soda to brush, it's about the same. Just make sure your miswak isn't wet or has mold growing on it. Edited to add: I've seen some that is supposed to be "mint" flavored, but I prefer the regular. If you don't like the regular one, maybe you can try mint? But I wouldn't use the mint one while fasting. |

also, shall i brush side to side or up and down? iv managed to soldier the smell, so i guess i wont be buying the mint and keep it all natural but when i get little pieces in my mouth i feel like being sick, so i keep my mouth still (so i cant feel the pieces) and then quickly wash it out aha jazakallah |

so is it a bad idea to wash the whole miswak? You can wet it, but don't keep it long - a couple days at the most. If you use it daily and cut down the area you used every time, then it will only last that long anyway. I generally brush both ways- up & down, side to side, and sometimes little circles to make sure to clean well since it's not the same as using a toothbrush. The little pieces I chew up and spit out. They don't bother me. But if they bother you, perhaps you could either use a knife to remove the outer area or chew the miswak well to break off the outside and spit that out before you start brushing your teeth with it. Rinse the miswak and your mouth out before using it as a brush so you find less little pieces. You'll also get less of the flavor this way as most of the flavor of it is in the bark(outside). As the previous brother said though, you might want to try another miswak just to be sure the one you have is fresh. I've had some that smelled and tasted better than others. Though to be honest, none of them tasted good. It just reminds me of using baking soda(kind of bitter and salty) rather than toothpaste which is sweet. May Allah reward you for your efforts and make it easy for you. Ameen. |

slaam Try this, it has worked for me : Wash your miswak in water throughly and place it under sunlight until the miswak gets dried. Then use it you will not find any bad smell or odour. |
