Default What's the Status of Paan?

Those who don't know what Paan is: Click here.

Have authentic scholars ever issued a verdict on paan? Does it's ruling (mubah, makruh or haram) depend on the use of tobaco? Is it true, that an Indian king after witnessing the miracle of the moon-splitting, sent 3 gifts to Rasulullah and one of them was paan?

Any useful information would be appreciated.

I would eat paan like a mad man. Ulama differ in opinion from what I got - some say it is haraam. Some say because the tobacco dont give off bad smell its not haraam. If you eat paan before salaat tho u have to brush ur teeth becuz the tobacco does leave a smell on breath - I dont care what tobacco you are using with the rose petals mixed in and all that, no, it leaves a bad smell. I have seen big ulama mashaikh eat paan like chewing gum. Paan is a bad habit though, I dont regret leaving it.

Madinah Munawwarah.

All these things are banned here. You don't find them easily. You can find them but it's dangerous.

Beside paan there are "maava" without beetel leaves.
Some people eat maava instead of paan. Whereas few people prefer putting snuff (nasvar) in their mouth.

Bro kashmir have rightly said gujarati are highly addicted to paan, maava and gutkha(manikchand, etc)

Someone asked my friend, why do u eat paan? He replied that sahaba have eaten dry leaves of the tree during their difficult period. Now(he sad laughingly) we being very weak in imaan cannot do such mujahida but wish to imitate sahab's, therefore instead of eating bare leaf we add little chunna, katha, masala, supari etc. so that it become eatable.

Although I eat paan occasionaly but I would not recommend it its a bad habbit.

Infact once when he was in jamate in a village of indonesia. Before making ablution he was cleaning his mouth filled with paan. Since he spat the red liquid of the paan in the wudhukhana, the local brother who was unaware of the paan, started shouting like sheikchilli, blood..... Later on he was told its not blood but paan.

The place where we live have paan shops in huge no.

Try to take a meetha-paan for your wife at least once.

Pls refer the image of nasvar granules. It is very cheap and easily available. It is very harmful and injurious for health.

Bro Kashmir have rightly said Nasvar paan is not everybody's cup of tea.

May Allah Ta'ala abstain us from all intoxication.
I have seen people breaking fast with a date and then either naswar, paan or cigaratte.

Infact some people inorder to get intoxicated, put "IODEX"(famous oinment for bone pain), as spreading, on brown bread to get nasha.

In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Assalaamu `alaykum waRahmatullahi Wabarakatoh

It is clear that there is much harm in the use of the products. All the experts are unanimous that those products are harmful to the body and cause cancer and therefore prohibited.

Allah Ta’ala says in the Qur’an:

وَيُحِلُّ لَهُمُ الطَّيِّبَاتِ وَيُحَرِّمُ عَلَيْهِمُ الْخَبَائِثَ (الاعراف)

And permits pure thing for them and forbids them from impure things. (Al-A’raaf – 157)

وَلَا تَقْتُلُوا أَنْفُسَكُمْ (النساء)

Do not kill yourselves (al-Nisa’-29)

وَلَا تُلْقُوا بِأَيْدِيكُمْ إِلَى التَّهْلُكَةِ (البقرة)

And do not throw your own hands (do not lead yourselves) into destruction.

(Al-Bakakah-195)

Haram and makrooh are different levels of prohibitions. That does not make a difference from a practical point of view. One has to abstain from haram as well as makrooh.

And Allah knows best

Wassalam
