BUSTING A MYTH
Clerics, scholars urge Muslims to donate blood Sumitra Deb Roy TNN The times of India Mumbai: Blood donation could witness a major boost if the Muslim community participates in the drive. On the eve of World Blood Donor Day on June 14,clerics and scholars appealedtothecommunity to donate blood as it was a myth that the practice was against Islam. A State Blood Transfusion Council source said the community contributed to less than 1% voluntary donations in the city.Doctors also agreed that though it was uncommon for a member of the community to refuse blood transfusion in an emergency,it was rare to find someone who would voluntarily donate blood. Consultant physician at Kurlas Kohinoor Hospital Dr Malih Siddiqui said it was time the community shed its reservations as blood donation was scientific and religious. They are fine with using blood from banks but, there is a bit of hesitation to donate bloodwhen hospitals askthem to replace those units, he said.We have to make consistent efforts to remove taboos and myths. He was speaking at a seminar at Kohinoor Hospital on Monday that was held to encourage blood donation by Muslims. Altaf Patel,a trustee of Hindustani Masjid in Byculla, recalled how a blood donation camp held over a year ago received a tepid response.Though more than 700 people registered, only 250 turned up.Many thought it was against Islam, said Patel. But he added the scene was fast changing and the younger generation was warming up to the idea. Theidea issecondedby Mohammed Zakaria, principal of Islamic school Anwar ul uloom, who said Islam supported blood donation or transfusion when required. If someones life is at stake,Islam says blood donation is the right thing to do, he said, adding that people must understand that blood was a life-saver that could not be manufactured artificially.Zakaria, however, added it would be againstthe principlesof Islam if someone was forced to donate blood or it was done for monetary benefit. |
