Depends which kind of sports. Some sports are actually good like wrestling (of course wrestling with your clothes on and not wrestling in your underwear WWF style)

Boxing would probably fall under wrestling

Then there's archery, horse back riding, and fencing.
but some say sports like wrestling, if its done in an aggressive manner, its wrong to watch because its a harmful sport...sports like boxing falls under that category because they are harmful sports to participate in and watch..the wrestling of muhammad's (s) day was not like the wrestling of our own.

Sports and Entertainment in Islam by Shaykhul Islam Mufti Muhammad Taqi Usmani حفظه الله
Link: deoband (dot) org/2010/06/hadith/hadith-commentary/sports-and-entertainment-in-islam/

-------------------

Sports which are permissible to play, are also permissible to watch, so long as they do not contain any sin. In my opinion, to watch anything (including sports, news, political debates etc.) on TV is (without a shadow of doubt) a waste of time even if it is for a nano-sec or 2. Almost all of the TV programs are a composite of many sins as per saying of Mufti Muhammad Taqi Usmani حفظه الله

It is better to indulge yourself in Zikr, Prayer or any other Islamic practice. Even if you play any of the permissible sports, play it to keep yourself physically fit and healthy (i.e with the intention that I am playing this to keep myself fit and healthy so that I be able to do maximum work for Islam).

Remember, why did Allah Most High create us?

I did not create the Jinns and the human beings except for the purpose that they should worship Me. [Al-Quran 51:56]

what if we are not just watching sports on tv but outside in the park watching brothers run a game?
can you say the same?

Im a BIG, i mean BIG football fan.

And how can chess be haram? I swear khalid ibn walid (ra) used to play it.

And also didnt the Prophet race with his wives?

Surely were allowed to have fun arent we? Especially if we still do all the required things ie praying and reading quran. I dont like it when people start trying to make everything haram thus making life boring, it can cause serious effects like people leaving the religion all because of some slightly miserable and boring scholar calling stuff haram when theyre not.

Its also sunnah to wrestle btw

Regarding running, etc, these are all good things for they make you fit and healthy. Swimming is good too. Watching sports however, is a complete waste of time, not to mention the fact that you may see people with their body uncovered and televised matches always have music at some point and camera shots of women, etc. Hence, its best to stay away

Also, people should not watch tv in general, for various reasons that also apply to televised sporting events

I prefer to play rather than watch, I used to play cricket at semi pro level and play football at sunday league level, also play badminton, and work out 3 days a week. Personally theres more benefits in actually doing a sport, than watching it, but thats me,

Btw, please remember that chess is NOT haram because it is a watse of time- it's haram because of analogy (being like backgammon). The wisdom behind the ruling, however, may be that it is haram because it is a waste of time

This thread reminded me...... there is a certain Shaykh, who will remain nameless, and I really like to listen to his lectures on youtube. So, one night I was looking him up to see if I could find more lectures and information, and his facebook page showed up in google, so I clicked it. I think just about every single post to his facebook page from him was about the sports he was watching. I realize Shaykh's are real people too, but quite honestly I wish I had not seen the facebook-sports-fanatic page.

Actually the more manly and rough the sport is, the more Islaamic it is.

That's why I don't like soccer, it's a sissy European sport.

Ice hockey...now there's a game.

Sis,

There is a certain Shaykh that I had a private discussion with and I showed him the opinions of his own teachers which are at odds with his behavior.

Shaykhs are real people as well but they should lead the way in curbing desires and not succumbing to commercial'ism.

I think though judging from certain brothers' reply, if a youngster to the forum or a newcomer came upon this thread he might get the wrong message and stop sports altogether, and continue messing about with girls and smoking reefer etc..

Sports do provide a way out of pverty for many youth, and even bring one closer to the deen, thats why Im a bit surprised to see a few brothers against sport. I reckon its more of a personal thing (the brothers might not be in pristine physical shape).

Did your discussion help? I never feel as though I am in any position to tell most people things like that.

I agree that people like Shaykh's should lead the way in curbing desires. That is why I wish I had not seen the sports-fanatic page. Every time I see a lecture now I keep imagining him breaking in saying, "Go! Go! Go! Yes! Score!" Or something to that effect. It just ruins the lectures. It's like every time I hear the name Jimmy Swaggart I think of his problem with prostitutes. (Not comparing prostitutes with sports..... just saying I now associate these people with their vice/ addiction.)

But yes, I agree that people like Shaykh's should be role models. I am not even opposed to watching sports (in moderation), but to see a page that contains absolutely nothing but sports fanaticism then it is disheartening to me.

I think there is a difference in watching and in playing sports. From my experiences, those who are huge sports fanatics tend to be arm chair sportsmen. They are not the ones out there playing. They sit and watch, know all the stats, can tell you about every player and team, etc.

I agree that playing sports has many benefits. But wasting countless hours simply watching sports on tv..... well, at least offer to fold the laundry and not make it a total waste of time.

Of course it is better if you play with them rather than sit and watch.
