Well just my own opinion: It's wrong because it's a massive waste of time. We're not talking about people just watching a sporting event once in a while. Most people who follow sports are pretty obsessive about them. And they don't just watch one sport, but several. So they end up wasting several hours each week watching sports year-round. And then they waste several more hours discussing each match amongst each other. And then they might even start to memorize each player's stats and history, wasting precious memory. I mean, playing sports yourself is one thing, at least you're getting exercise and enjoying some recreation at the same time. But what is so entertaining about watching other people play sports? I just don't get it. And then on top of that you have all the other haram things that come with watching sports, like cheerleaders, ads with haram content, music, gambling. |

what if there was no ads or cheerleaders shown and the sound down and no gambling, and the players are just playing the game..whats wrong with watching them play? people watch to see incredible feats of athleticism. they like seeing great plays..if your prayers are still being made, whats wrong with watching? why is it a waste of time?

Can you imagine on qiyama, when our whole life will seem like a second gone by, we will be wishing that instead of watching nfl/nhl for hours and hours we made one more subhanallah or astaghfirullah...our own mothers/brothers.sisters will be coming to us asking for one more good deed and we will be running away from them saying that we need all our good deeds for ouseleves...now what do you think about nfl? |

I also watch cricket when gets bored and I think its ok to watch it for time you have mentined But why the scholars advise to stay away from the sports is because the sportmen wears short pant which is against the teaching of Shariah and some sports are lengthy like cricket which sometimes continue for 5 days, so Scholars usually advised to just stay away from sports. Boxing would probably fall under wrestling Then there's archery, horse back riding, and fencing. |

Sports and Entertainment in Islam by Shaykhul Islam Mufti Muhammad Taqi Usmani حفظه الله Link: deoband (dot) org/2010/06/hadith/hadith-commentary/sports-and-entertainment-in-islam/ ------------------- Sports which are permissible to play, are also permissible to watch, so long as they do not contain any sin. In my opinion, to watch anything (including sports, news, political debates etc.) on TV is (without a shadow of doubt) a waste of time even if it is for a nano-sec or 2. Almost all of the TV programs are a composite of many sins as per saying of Mufti Muhammad Taqi Usmani حفظه الله It is better to indulge yourself in Zikr, Prayer or any other Islamic practice. Even if you play any of the permissible sports, play it to keep yourself physically fit and healthy (i.e with the intention that I am playing this to keep myself fit and healthy so that I be able to do maximum work for Islam). Remember, why did Allah Most High create us? I did not create the Jinns and the human beings except for the purpose that they should worship Me. [Al-Quran 51:56] |

I think you are right but there are a penalty of good things you can watch on T.V like there is a channel Al Qur'an Al Kareem on which there is recitation from different Qari's of the world all 24 hours with live telecast from Khanna Kabba so what about such things............... Link: ashrafiya (dot) com/2010/10/13/watching-television-2/ If (only) you can keep yourself to Islamic stuff. |

salam brother: and remember: "We did not create the jinn and men except to worship us" [Surah adh-Dhariyyat, verse 56) anything that leads you away from Allah is haram. anything you do in place of ibaadat is haram. yet you are not asked to give up on this world. you are asked to live in it in the way Allah has prescribed. every aspect of your life should have a connection with Allah's worship and remembrance. how does watching sports when you could be praying nafl, doing zikr and other good deeds classify as superior?think about it. come towards Allah and you will soon realize that your heart isnt in this world and this world is just a test and temporary. also, you will get all that you desire in Jannat. just wait a little while |

I think there is nothing wrong with watching a sports game once in a while, as long as all haraam things are avoided. After all, didn't the Prophet and his wife Aaisha watch a group of Ethiopians practicing with their spears in the Masjid? |
