This thread answers a lot of questions I have also. I believe I'm in the same situation as the original poster.

La=no
ilaha=worthy of worship
illa=except
Allah=God
Muhammed (PBUH)=The Last Prophet of God
Rasool=Prophet

Summary:
There is no god but God and Muhammed (PBUH) is His messenger.

This is the kalimah (word), phrase that is the Islamic creed. By reciting this you enter the fold of Islam.

If you do that with sincerity.

The other statement that brother Abu Dajanaa has given you, that too effectively asserts the same. Translation of that is:

I bear witness that there no one worthy of worship except Allah and I assert that Muhammed (PBUH) is His messenger.

I hope it answers your query.

Thank you. I know a little bit of Arabic, but I don't trust myself with the guesswork of words I don't know when it relates to religion.

I have looked into the wearing of a head covering in other religions, and have found that I particularly like the reasons for doing so as specified in islam. The torah and the christian new testiment both state that a woman should wear a covering on their head for prayer (and christianity stating for submissive reasons). Therefore I see no reason as to why this cannot (or should not) still be practiced.

The reason I ask if a non-muslim could wear the hijab is because I wanted to make know if it would be seen as offensive or encouraged.

I know that there are other ways of covering one's head, but the reasons for wearing the hijab, and the hijab itself, are generally more appealing to me.

Please give your thoughts. Thank you.

You should check out some of the hijab styles coming out of Egypt; even I have to admit they're quite fashionable
