Default Ruh remains for 40 days?

a family friend of ours was telling us that, when a person dies, his ruh keeps visiting the house for at least 40 days.
i need a detailed answer about this. my current understanding is that when a person dies he goes to Barzakh, and his family members can do eesal-e-sawab from anywhere in the world at any time, not necessarily after 3 days, then 10 days, then 40 days, and then every year.
