Default Purpose of Visiting the Graves of the Pious

What should be the primary intention of a Muslim, when visiting the graves of the pious and righteous (or even Sahabah)? Is it to gain spiritual blessings/benefits or to remind yourself of your own death?

I met a brother from Caucasus and I asked him, if many Sahabah came to that part of the world and Russia. He replied, that yes many Sahabah came but they all were martyred and not able to conquer much of these places. So, I asked if one still knows where their graves are and... THAT WAS IT. While answering neither clearly in the affirmative nor negative, he gave me a suspicious look and the lecture on Tauheed started. So, we just agreed that graves should be visited to reflect upon your own destination, but in the back of my head I was wondering if it was wrong to actually believe in spiritual benefits through visiting the graves of the Saliheen?

Maybe one of you knowledgable brother and sisters can shed some light.

You should have told him that you planned on going to those graves to worship them, as you were getting tired of worshiping your local graves.

Just kidding.

I don't think it can be to gain blessings because how can a grave give you blessings :s

I think he means the blessings that Allah Ta;ala sends on the graves of the pious as the grave is a part from heaven or form hell.

السلام عليكم

The Sunnah is to visit the graves to remember death, not necessarily the graves of the Awliya and the graves of the companions, you can visit your father's grave and you'll still get the reward of the Sunnah and the Du'ah you were instructed to recite near graves.

That's at it's place, but why are we so eager to visit the graves of the pious then?

Shaykh Al-Albani writes in "Mukhtasar Ahkaam al-Janaa’iz" (found here):

The purpose of visiting the graves is twofold:

(a) The visitor benefits from remembering death and the dead, remembering that their destiny will be either Paradise or Hell. This is the primary purpose of the visit.

(b) The deceased also benefits and is treated kindly by the visitor greeting him with salaams, making du’aa’ for him, praying for forgiveness for him. This applies only to Muslims. So, is an additional third purpose not valid: To kind of spiritually benefit from visiting the graves of the pious and righteous? Remember, I'm not referring to any grave-worshipping or shirki beliefs.

Salaam,

They are visited for maw'idha (beneficial reminder) and baraka.

Visiting is a great 'amal, that, if performed with the proper etiquettes can be the means of a lot of khayr of different sorts.

We ask Allah for tawfeeq.

I know what you mean bro but I just wanted to point that out because these days we hear the term "Visiting Awliya" a lot so I thought I'd remind the brothers that visiting the graves is Sunnah but not necessarily the Sahaba's graves, you can visit any member of your family to fulfil this sunnah and take the reward.

So we have no resolution at all to the original poster's question?

Any Ulema care to weigh in?
