Whereabouts in Italy is there a Muslim population? And what are the chances of finding halal food?

Assalamu alikum.
I didn't think Italy would be a nice place for Muslims so looked into it & found this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xb0wm...e_gdata_player

Italians are not very religious but dislike very much anyone who are not catholic.

You might want to wait for an answer from brother Umar Italy, sure he'll be able to help.

I have relatives living in Italy and have been there myself several times two years ago but noticed that many Muslim youth are quite assimilated into the Italian lifestyle. You could say the same goes for young Muslims in Western European countries but I still think it is pretty different. Although here many youngsters do not practice they will often when they get into their 25 or still have some kind of link with Islam through their Muslim community they live in.
Here, Western Europa, you will also find bigger Muslim communities, Islamic schools, institutions, neighbourhoods where Muslims are visibly present and you will find many halal shops for example. Especially these last things I did not find in and around Rome, which is their capital. I had to carefully look for Muslims and for example halal food. It might be different in some Northern cities.
Immigration also started quite late in Italy compared to Western European countries and you have many illegal North Africans living there. This probably adds to the fact that Muslims are not (yet) "settled" there by having their own schools, shops, communities etc. Another thing is that Italy is culturally very catholic of course and many want to keep it like that, whether they practice their religion or not. The last thing they are waiting for is Islam and often they are not very shy to admit that. This last thing is about foreigners and Muslim immigrants in general.

Sorry just saw the thread, hope not to be too late.

Whereabouts in Italy is there a Muslim population?
Mainly in the North but scattered all over the country, around one million and a half Muslims.

And what are the chances of finding halal food?
Quite easy in the biggest cities or wherever there is a Muslim population, near Islamic centers etc.
But there isn't any trustworty certification agency as they have in UK or SA.

If you need any other info just let me know.

Assalamu alikum.

Islamophobia is on the rise as in the whole west but let's not exaggerate, one can still live without any considerable problems as a Muslim in Italy, at least so far.

And the "catholicity" of Italians is more a myth than a reality nowadays.

I have relatives living in Italy and have been there myself several times two years ago but noticed that many Muslim youth are quite assimilated into the Italian lifestyle. You could say the same goes for young Muslims in Western European countries but I still think it is pretty different. That's true, there isn't any concrete work for the youngsters going on and care is only for opening musallas but not for education.

Especially these last things I did not find in and around Rome, which is their capital. I had to carefully look for Muslims and for example halal food. It might be different in some Northern cities.
Uhm, Rome is a huge city, you just have to look for the right place..

Immigration also started quite late in Italy compared to Western European countries and you have many illegal North Africans living there. This probably adds to the fact that Muslims are not (yet) "settled" there by having their own schools, shops, communities etc.
True.

As I said racism is on the rise but I would reiterate that the "catholic culture" of today's Italy is quite overemphasized..

P.S.: Bro if you are going to visit Italy again just let me know, it would be nice to meet you here insha'Allah; I live in the North-West.

Sorry . Just out of curiosity, would you know if there is any Masjid in Venice? Because I went there and it didn't seem like there would be any.

I asked around and have been told at least two, but never been there personally, although I may go around there soon insha'Allah.

If you may need any address or any info, just let me know.

no, no. Not that I had any plans for going lol. I was just curious. I went there, and I barely saw any Muslims and I got a lot of weird looks. Honestly, it looks like the last place where there would be a Masjid.

I found out this mosque - it's a Turkish mosque with facilities for women:

Via dell'elettricitą, 20
Marghera - Venezia (Venice).
