Allah knows best who are His friends..

Moulana Yunus Patel saheb mentions in his book Ikhlaas

It reminds me : A young person, after listening to a talk, experienced a revolution in his heart. He asked me : “With my past, with the sins in my life, how is it possible for me to become a Wali ?”

I said : “It is extremely simple. It takes just one minute to become a Wali. Raise your hands and with deep regret and remorse in your heart, shed a few tears and pray to Allah : ‘O Allah, I have wasted my life, but I want to become Your Wali; I want to become Your friend. So forgive all the sins which I have committed since maturity, and grant me the Taufeeq to do that which pleases You in my future life.’

You have immediately become a Wali. Now make an effort towards fulfilling those rights which had been violated. The effort made indicates to the sincerity of your Taubah.”

If Salaah and Fasts were missed then Qaza must necessarily be made. If Zakaat, Qurbaani and Sadaqatul Fitr were not fulfilled then such monies must necessarily be paid. The same applies to monies that are owing to people. Pay back to whomsoever, what is due, or ask them to forgive. If not, then that Taubah will not be complete. And if harm and injury was caused to another, then his forgiveness should be sought.

If there are a number of outstanding Salaah or fasts due, then it is obvious that a person cannot read all the Qazas in one day, or keep all his missed fasts in one day. This will take due time. However, the intention of the person, to fulfill all dues of Allah Ta’ala and Creation, and the effort made in that direction makes the person a friend and beloved of Allah Ta’ala.

Allah Ta’ala states in the Qur`aan Sharief, regarding those who make Taubah :

“…Verily Allah loves those who repent…”

[Surah Baqarah 2 : 222]

Assalaamu 'alaykum.
I too would like to add advices of Shaykh Muhammad Saleem Dhorat (hafizahullah) regarding attaining the status of wilaayat (special friendship with Allah subhaanahu wata'ala):

Can & Will

“To become a Wali (a special friend of Allah), all that is required is Iman and Taqwaa.
Everyone, regardless of background and walk of life, has the ability to acquire Iman and Taqwaa, and thus become a Wali. Proof of this is that men of Allah can be found in all different fields and professions.

Therefore mentally counsel yourself that you can and you will become a Wali. And ask Allah ta’ala by saying:
‘O Allah, make me your Wali and grant me all the requirements and means to get me there.’

***

The Greatest Miracle

“The greatest miracle is steadfastness. Manifestations and miracles are not an indication of being a friend of Allah. The great Shaykh Ba Yazid Bustami rahamatullahi alayh states that: Seeing a person do miraculous feats is not a sign of a his being a Wali; following the Sunnah in its entirety is a sign of a Wali"

***

Friendship with Allah (Part 1)

We should not think to ourselves that Wilayah (close friendship with Allah) is something really special which can only be acquired by scholars of high rank. Each and every person can acquire Wilayah.

Even those who have not yet been blessed with faith have the potential of becoming amongst the greatest friends of Allah.

Shaytaan however deceives us by making us think that Wilayah is something extraordinary and unbelievably difficult to attain. But if we adopt this attitude and give up right from the beginning then will we never get anywhere.

Wilayah is in the reach of each and every person; all that is required is that one exerts the right effort in the right manner. This is why people from every background and profession are found amongst our pious predecessors.

Allah ta’ala created men of Allah in every field in order to demonstrate to us that everyone can become the Wali (friend) of Allah

Isn't the key that we acknowledge, and then keep striving forward to overcome? And meanwhile, while a person is in actuality a true friend of Allah Ta'aala, they won't think it themselves, they'll just see themselves with Tawadhu.

Like Khwaja Majzoob said

"Tere Gulistaan mein sab gul hain
Bas ek agar hoon to khaar mein hoon"

ie In Your garden everyone is a flower
If there is one then I am that one thorn (someone else can translate the last verse properly )

When the Akaabir say things like quoted in the above posts, then I feel it's to give hope that we too, even though we are entrenched in sins, can become Allah lovers, as long as the desire and effort is there.

... and hide themselves.
Precisely that is the dilemma that one faces while trying to find answer to the OP.

By the way what is the original of the couplet that you are using as your signature?

Unfortunately, I cannot even remember where I got it from. I will search through the kitabs I have .

The original I have never read, but I am quite sure it is 100 times more beautiful than the translation.

Bismillahi
Assalamu alaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuhu
I have some concerns.
Achieving wilayat is it really that easy?
I can be steadfast on salah or any worship outwardly but I see so many diseases when I see my inner.
And unless I get rid of takabbur, hasad and many spiritual diseases, how can I become wali?
And getting rid of spiritual diseases is the toughest thing I see for it needs very tough struggle and only Allah knows how long does it take one to get rid of each disease.
I do hear that wilayat is easy like when a slave commits sins and repents for the sins, Allah is so Generous and Kind that Allah takes him as wali and he becomes beloved to Him. Allahu alam.
But what I see is all these spiritual struggle is not that easy and it is very tough and sometimes I wonder can I really get rid of the diseases for the strong nafs I have.
wa'alaykumus salaam sister mercyof Allah
i know what you are saying however think of it like this...when can our worship (be it outward or spriritual) ever be perfect? Is it not only Allah subhaanahu wata'ala Who is without any defect? The concern and the tears of regret and the continuous struggle to please Him and to seek the help of those chosen servants of His to get close to Him.....are these not signs of being blessed with His friendship? We are not Prophets who are sinless. We all slip up however the struggle continues and the friends of Allah subhaanahu wata'ala turn to Him immediately and strengthen their connection...and this is how i understand it and Allah knows best.

^ Beautiful

Allah Ta'aala is so Kind, Loving, Merciful, that even our overcoming our desires and leaving one sin is beloved to Him, and He will change it to a good deed instead.

Hiding oneself means one who knows already they are and only then the word hiding comes.

As far as sister sodoku's post, I see it fits those who are really walis but they have humility of not exposing. I am talking about cases like mine who are not and find it hard when I read that wilayat is easy. Khair I will leave it here.
Wassalam

My reply was to the OP, not in relation to your query. Here are my two cents. Every believer is basically a Wali. One goes out of the fold of friendship by committing sins but sincere repentance restores the friendship.
Easy now?

alhamdulillah...simple solution! My Shaykh also says that every Believer is a Wali and he adds that the more Taqwa (refraining from every disobedience) and the more adherance to the sunnah the higher the stage of Wilaayah.

Assalaam'aaleykum!

Wilayat is something which nobody can claim to have achieved. Someone who dares to make such claim hasn't even reached the dehleez of Wilayat.

What we all can and should do is to strive as much as we could and let Allah decide who does He accept as His wali.

Just my two paisa.

true. Let Allah be the Judge, for He IS the true Judge.

reminds me of the poem br Rahmaniyyah had posted a few weeks ago..

"Mit mit kar mit ja, faqeera, mit mit kar mit ja"

I just want to say though that although we should not consider ourselves wali, but we should not lose the hope that Allah Ta'aala may consider us to be His wali.

After all, He knows best which deed of ours He loves. It could even be the fake crying just because real tears won't come.

May Allah Ta'aala accept us all as His friends. Ameen
