 The Salaf and Loud Dhikr
 The following quote is taken from a "Salafi" forum. If I have understood correctly the first (in Arabic) is a sahih hadith found in either Sahih al-Bukhari or Sahih Muslim, followed by comments from Imam al-Nawawi. Quote: حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ حَاتِمٍ أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَكْرٍ أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ قَالَ ح و حَدَّثَنِي إِسْحَقُ بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ وَاللَّفْظُ لَهُ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ أَخْبَرَنِي عَمْرُو بْنُ دِينَارٍ أَنَّ أَبَا مَعْبَدٍ مَوْلَى ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّ رَفْعَ الصَّوْتِ بِالذِّكْرِ حِينَ يَنْصَرِفُ النَّاسُ مِنْ الْمَكْتُوبَةِ كَانَ عَلَى عَهْدِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَأَنَّهُ قَالَ قَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ كُنْتُ أَعْلَمُ إِذَا انْصَرَفُوا بِذَلِكَ إِذَا سَمِعْتُهُ "...That raising the voice in Thikr at the time of the people finishing the perscribed prayers was upon the guidance of the Prophet', and that ('Abu Ma'bad, the freed slave of 'Ibn 'Abbaas) said, 'Ibn 'Abbaas said: 'I would know when they finished with (the perscribed prayers) when I heard it..." 'Imaam an-Nawawee says in his Sharh: Quote: هَذَا دَلِيل لِمَا قَالَهُ بَعْض السَّلَف أَنَّهُ يُسْتَحَبّ رَفْع الصَّوْت بِالتَّكْبِيرِ وَالذِّكْر عَقِب الْمَكْتُوبَة . وَمِمَّنْ اِسْتَحَبَّهُ مِنْ الْمُتَأَخِّرِينَ اِبْن حَزْم الظَّاهِرِيّ ، وَنَقَلَ اِبْن بَطَّال وَآخَرُونَ أَنَّ أَصْحَاب الْمَذَاهِب الْمَتْبُوعَة وَغَيْرهمْ مُتَّفِقُونَ عَلَى عَدَم اِسْتِحْبَاب رَفْع الصَّوْت بِالذِّكْرِ وَالتَّكْبِير ، وَحَمَلَ الشَّافِعِيّ - رَحِمَهُ اللَّه تَعَالَى - هَذَا الْحَدِيث عَلَى أَنَّهُ جَهَرَ وَقْتًا يَسِيرًا حَتَّى يُعْلِمهُمْ صِفَة الذِّكْر ، لَا أَنَّهُمْ جَهَرُوا دَائِمًا قَالَ : فَاخْتَارَ لِلْإِمَامِ وَالْمَأْمُوم أَنْ يَذْكُرَا اللَّه تَعَالَى بَعْد الْفَرَاغ مِنْ الصَّلَاة وَيُخْفِيَانِ ذَلِكَ ، إِلَّا أَنْ يَكُون إِمَامًا يُرِيد أَنْ يُتَعَلَّم مِنْهُ فَيَجْهَر حَتَّى يَعْلَم أَنَّهُ قَدْ تُعُلِّمَ مِنْهُ ، ثُمَّ يُسِرُّ ، وَحُمِلَ الْحَدِيث عَلَى هَذَا . "This is evidence for whoever of the Salaf said that raising the voice is preferred, with Takbeer and other Thikr, at the end of the perscribed prayers. And among the later Scholars who preferred this opinion are 'Ibn Hazm ath-Thaahiree, and 'Ibn Battaal and others related that the companions of the followed Schools, and other than them agreed upon the lack of preference of raising the voice in Thikr and Takbeer, and ash-Shaafi'ee conveyed this narration including that '...it appeared for a small amount of time until he taught them the description of Thikr, not that they raised (their voices) continuously; So it was preferred for the 'Imaam and the follower to remember Allah, Exalted is He, after the end of prayer and to conceal (their Thikr), except when the 'Imaam wanted to teach about it, so he raised (his voice in it) until he knew that it was indeed learned from him, then he did so in silently...' And the narration indicates this..." What do those with knowledge make of this? |
