Default What does Quran mean by the word 'Ahlul Bayt' ?
Hi, I am ... welll.... not a muslim yet. But I plan on becoming one very soon. But before I actually convert, I want to get all the facts straight and sort everything out because, to be honest, Islam seems very confusing to me right now. So for the last few months I've been doing my homework, you know, researching, studying and all.

From a Muslim friend of mine, i know a little about sunni/shia stuff. Right now I am studying sunni books and I plan to study the shia books too to figure out what I what to become eventually. I guess I don't really need to be a sunni or a shia as long as I believe in oneness of Allah and His Prophet Muhammad and Quran, right? But still for the sake of knowledge as well as my personal satisfaction, I am planning to read widely on both sects of Islam.

I am also studying Quran Exegesis. and while studying Surah Ahzab, I came across it's verse # 33

“Verily, Allah has decreed to purify you, O' Ahlul Bayt (people of the house), and sanctify you in a perfect way”

At another place, it was written:

"Say (O Mohammad, unto mankind): I do not ask of you any reward of this; but love for my near kins; and whosoever earns good, We give him more of good therein..."
(42:23)

I believe, as Muslims most of you must have read the whole Quran with its underlying meanings. Can you shed some light on 'Ahlul Bayt' (the people of the house) as to what Quran actually means by people of the house and near kins?

A good morning to you, my dear pre-sister, and may I invite you to embrace Islam sooner as opposed to later? Later is never certain, life is uncertain, it is the most fragile gift that anyone has ever had or ever will have.

To define ahlul bayt, let's look at the other verse wherein it is mentioned, and this will shed some light.

They said: Wonderest thou at the commandment of Allah? The mercy of Allah and His blessings be upon you, O people of the house! Lo! He is Owner of Praise, Owner of Glory! Pickthall translation, Surah Hud, ayat 73.

The precise word is used in the same verse that you have quoted. The context of this is the following: The angels of Allah had brought Ibrahim and Ibrahim's wife the good news of a son named Ishaq and a grandson, Yaq'ub . There were two people in the room. The term 'Ahlul Bayt' is a plural; therefore, Ibrahim and his wife were included in the categorization of Ahlul Bayt. You can check this in the available online version of Tafsir ibn Kathir, though I would refrain from relying on it exclusively.

Ultimately, the term 'Ahlul Bayt' refers to family; all the family. This includes wives. The Shi'a exclude wives from the definition, but their sources for doing so are highly dubious.

I pray that you enter Islam and walk in the sight of Allah purified, and I hope that this has helped.

Peace and blessings of God be with you sister. I cannot answer this question, but I know of an Imam that can. If you happen to be on Facebook, add "Suhaib Webb". He is one of the more respected scholars and can probably answer most questions you would have. He is one of the world's more respected scholars. You can find his lectures on youtube, but if you go on facebook, he can answer questions that you may have about Islam in the best manner. Peace, Assalamualaikum, and welcome to the family.

the answer to this particular ayah

“Verily, Allah has decreed to purify you, O' Ahlul Bayt (people of the house), and sanctify you in a perfect way”

is found in the verse that comes before it

O wives of the Prophet! you are not like any other of the women; If you will be on your guard, then be not soft in (your) speech, lest he in whose heart is a disease yearn; and speak a good word. (33: 32)

And stay in your houses and do not display your finery like the displaying of the ignorance of yore; and keep up prayer, and pay the poor-rate, and obey Allah and His Messenger. Allah only desires to keep away the uncleanness from you, O people of the House! and to purify you a (thorough) purifying. (33: 33)

al-Salamu Aleykum,

What is meant by "Ahlul-Bayt" are the Mothers of believers meaning his wives, also his children and his cousins and uncles ect... Those of them who were Muslims of course.

What is meant by "Ahlul-Bayt" in this verse according to the clear text of the Quran are him PBUH and his Wives as they are the ones addressed in the verses and from the narrations We see that Other members are also included in This Verse such as Ali, Hassan, Hussein, Fatima & Wathilah ibn al-Asqa'a.
