Personally I dislike reading works of aḥādīth without any scholarly commentary, because I want to make sure that what I understand from a hadīth is also correct according to the scholars. From my own experience most if not all the lay people usually end up interpreting the aḥādīth on their own and try to deduce from them rulings even though they are not capable to do so. (Including myself.)

I think it was Shaykh al-Ḥadīth Muḥammad Zakariyyā (RA) who deplored the fact that people are reading aḥādīth without commentary and/or that works of ḥadīth are published with no scholarly commentary whatsoever. If I remember correct he stated this at the end of his treatise "The Differences of the Imams".

But maybe it is just me being an ignorant and others might very well be more intelligent and apt than this joker...

Please keep me in your duʿā, will you?

I agree with most of what you've said. However, Riyadu's-Salihin is a not a compendium of hadith where one can get lost. Rather, it is a systematically organized according to the subject with ayat from Qur'an in a such magnificent way that even layman can benefit without confusion. So if I were you I would buy Fathul Bari instead and/or the Sharh of Sahih Muslim by Imam Nawawi.

A small portion of Ibn Uthaymeen's commentary has been translated, and can be found online.

I can't comment on its quality (as I haven't read it).

I can definitely say that the Darussalam print is not any good.

Assaalamu alaikum brother,

I have to agree with Faruqi that reading hadith without commentary from a expert scholar is almost suicide.

The hadith in Riyadh as saliheen is trying to establish certain points which must be borne out by the scholars otherwise it is sometimes hard to understand why the hadith is there.

Also for example there is one hadith is Riyadh about a slave woman not accepting RasulAllah's duas for cure of disease for reward in akhirah? Does it mean we should not make dua?

I think it should also be noted that when the book was originally written, a layman was way more knowledgeable about Islam than a layman of today.

So if we say that Imam Nawawi wrote that book for laymen then we should not think ourselves on the same level as the laymen of his times...

Allah knows best.

Classical scholars spent their time for rather difficult tasks. Joke aside, I recently discovered a wonderful Sharh of Riyadussalihin by contemporary Turkish scholars. It consists of 8 volumes with core Arabic text & Turkish translation along with detailed explanations. Good news is that, although the book set costs around 100$, the publisher was so generous that they gave us complete press-release text of all 8 volumes at NO COST. May this be an example for other Islamic publishers.

Have a look.

You may use Google translate if you wish.

Dalilul Falihin li Turuqi Riyadussalihin - written by Imam Muhammad ibn Allan and is the first Sharh of Riyadussalihin. The author was born 996 Hijra in Makkah and died 1057 there. He wrote more than 60 books, including a sharh to al-Azkar of Imam Nawawi. He was a Shafi'i. He used mainly Ibn Hajars Fath al Bari, Imam Qastallanis Irshadus Sari and Imam Nawawis own book al-Minhaj, Sharh Sahih Muslim, for the Sharh.
