while i understand the onus is on me to provide evidence for my claims, I must say I hope the general hostility of this forum is not indicative of this entire forum. I'd be interested in seeing a scholarly source citing some of the misrepresentation the West has given to Islam regarding its selling of opiates or closing the doors of academic education to women.

I'm at work right now but when I get home, I will post an interview with the ambassador of the Taliban on NPR and a talk another Taliban spokesman gave in a lecture at the MSA of the University of Southern California. A lot of these allegations are cleared.
Abu Taubah of NYC made a statement once about the Taliban: "When I was studying, a lot of the shuyookh were saying that Quran is taught everywhere but it is only lived in Afghanistan. When the Americans decided to invade Afghanistan, a lot of shuyookh stopped saying these things. Allahu `alam why." |

I'd be interested in seeing a scholarly source citing some of the misrepresentation the West has given to Islam regarding its selling of opiates or closing the doors of academic education to women. firstly, this particular forum is very pro taliban - the taliban originated in the dar ul uloom deoband school system, and many of the mebers here are also a part of that scholarly tradition. So if you come with anything negative regarding the taliban in particular, the Muslims here are going to feel personaly attacked. second, the accusations you made are pretty heavy. i originally thought your question would be in regards to suicide bombings of civilians or something carried out by the Pakistani Taliban (which is a seperate and different group) - but instead you listed a crazy indictment of clear lies. for example the Opium trade you speak of under the taliban rule was almost eliminated - and once the taliban left power the opium bussiness boomed - this in itself is clear proof that the taliban are against the drug trade. The accusations of homsexuality and pedophilia are pretty extreme - so you cant just throw them out there without citing some sort of proof. Islam is a religion that strongly emphasizes proofs over hearsay - so you cant throw around accusations with out a little proof and expect Muslims to happily go along with it. I can assure you, that of the things you libled against the Afghan taliban were true - they would have no support from the outside Muslim community |

First and foremost, I must stress beyond doubt that the list of acts mentioned by the original poster are absolutely prohibited in Islam. Now, I hope you appreciate that the reason why people aren't answering your question is because its simple (I answered it in the previous sentence) and because we are hurt that accusations are being made against the Taliban without any concrete proof. For the truth regarding the Taliban, please check this video of a Taliban ambassador doing an interview on NPR in early 2001 where many of these allegations are cleared: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZpcSEDnB9v4 The please read the transcript of the video already posted in this thread: http://www.themodernreligion.com/jih...an/speech.html Other links with regards to this issue can be found here; http://www.themodernreligion.com/index2.html Amongst the links on those pages are quotes from former prisoners of the Taliban (thanking them for their hospitality) and a producer from CBS who had visited to see the truth on the ground Then if you want, please see Yvonne Ridley speaking about her time in Afghanistan too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fkN6P8Bp7jE Now, we have above given you eyewitness accounts of the Taliban and Afghanistan, as well as statements made by the Taliban themselves. Further research can be undertaken (such as finding more reports on how the Taliban eliminated opium cultivation, for example). In short, while the Taliban have never claimed to be perfect, I don't see any instances of the leaderhsip ever having contradticting the teachings of Islam, because they are free of what they are accused of |

Here is a chapter written in a book by a Jewish American journalist (and it specifically mentions the treatment of homosexuals by the Taliban): http://www.pureislam.co.za/index.php...d=81&Itemid=37 |

My view on the Taliban was negative before this thread.
It's sad that living in the west we believe what the Americans (israels slave) want us to believe. I have seen tv shows in Australia about how the Taliban treat women, bash them, degrade them etc.. After this post I feel so stupid for not looking into the real story, this is exactly why I don't watch tv or read newspapers here in the west anymore.. It just poisons our minds! Thank you all for opening my eyes.. I really love this forum & thank Allah for guiding me here. |

"The Taliban's version of Islamic law, or Shari'a, is historically inaccurate, contradictory, self-serving, and fundamentally deviant from prevailing interpretations of Islamic law and practice." |

Interview with CIA Veteran Michael Scheuer 'Only the Taliban Are Not Corrupt' The CIA is alleged to have been paying an aide to Afghan President Hamid Karzai for information. Former CIA officer Michael Scheuer spoke to SPIEGEL about why fighting corruption in Afghanistan is all but impossible. Info SPIEGEL: The CIA is alleged to have paid Mohammed Zia Salehi, an aide to Afghan President Hamid Karzai, for information. Has the CIA damaged the Americans' credibility? Michael Scheuer: That's absolutely good recruitment. I think you recruit whoever gives you access to a target. It might be someone who is a terrorist or it might be someone who's a corrupt official. I think any other intelligence agency would be delighted to have someone to give them information about what Karzai is thinking because he's such a dishonest man. SPIEGEL: The US now has to face accusations that it is financing the very corruption it is promising to fight. Scheuer: Not really. President Obama knew about this. His intelligence advisors knew about this. If he's smart I'm sure the president would want to have somebody close to Karzai to know what's going on. The US government and other governments are lying when they say that they can clean up corruption and win the war. SPIEGEL: Is Washington being energetic enough in trying to fight corruption? Scheuer: We're really not in a position to push these people. Who's going to replace them? There isn't anyone less corrupt. Probably the only incorrupt people in Afghanistan are the Taliban. If you want no corruption, give the government back to the Taliban. SPIEGEL: Salehi, a high-ranking member of Afghanistan's National Security Council, has allegedly been on the CIA payroll for years. Do you think he will be put on trial? Scheuer: I would think that there's not going to be a trial. Salehi knows so much about what goes on in that government and what's been stolen and who's doing the stealing, that if he got on a witness seat, it might as well be Karzai himself.
