Default Noor on the face? What does that mean?
Asslamo Allaikum,

When people say that certain people have Noor on their face? What does that mean? How do you tell?

I think certain people who achieve a certain connection with Allah have noor on their face. As to who can see it, the person seeing it probably must be a certain level too!

One brother once told us that one day, while sitting in Nizamuddin, there suddenly came a huge amount of noor and tranquility in the markaz. Looking up, he saw that Hadhrat Ji Maulana Inaam ul Hasan and Maulana Umar Palanpuri were returning from their walk.

I've also heard - I don't know how accurate this is - that there are different colors of noor, and people with a very high status can see the different colors of noor on people. Anyone heard about that before?

Jazakullah Khairun
assalamu 'alaykum,

There are people whose faces shine like the moon, there is so much nur on their face that nobody can miss it. You have to see it to believe it (and you may have already seen it).

How do you tell? It's difficult to describe but it looks like a florescent white light is nearby and its pointed in the direction of their face ... and their faces are reflecting this light.

wassalam

As Salaamu Alaikum

I dont know about different colours of noor but there are differring levels of birghtness. I have never met Hazrat Moulana Hakin Akhtar Sahib but I have heard he has tremendous noor on his face Alhamdulillah.

and Yes there are moments when Allah with his grace and mercy allows a person to see the noor on a certain persons face. If the noor is snatched away from such a person sometimes that can be noticable if Allah wills. With sin, noor is snatched away and with repentance and good deeds the noor starts buliding up. Every believer does have a certain level of noor due to possessing imaan. However, our aim should not be attaintment of the noor but our primary aim is the pleasure of Allah, noor is the result of sincere obedience of Allah and noor is the manifestation of Allah's pleasure on such an indiviual. It does not mean if we cannot see noor on a certains face than such a person is not pious, piety is noticable in actions and noor is a bounty/favour of Allah.

This topic is really deep and can take time to explain. May Allah grants us the ability to practice on his commands and instill the noor of imaan in our heart.

and Allah Ta'ala Knows Best.

I can attest to that. Enormous amount of nur on Hadrat's face. That is where I get my [spiritual] fluorescent white light theory from. : )

It's a glowing light that comes from the purifying of the soul such that it gives the spirit (which is rooted in the heart and flows in the blood) a glow, like the moon at night or like olive oil).

That's clearly what "abyadhat wujuhum" "their faces will be white" and "wujuhun yawmadhin na'imah" "faces that day will be beaming" etc. and on the flip side "aswadat wujuhuhum" "their faces will be blackened" referring to the disbelievers.

The spirit can shine through the flesh and blood and produce that glowing that comes purely from faith and strengthens when people perfect their souls like the sufis etc.

I speak on this based on first hand experience.

Spirits are either angels or demons. Ibn 'Abbas clearly new the meaning of the hadith that angels were created from light and jinn from nar samum.

Fire is where light comes from. The hotter the fire the brighter the light, and the less hot, the closer it is to the kind of black smoke that you see emanating off a barbeque grill or incence. The shayatin from the jinn look like smoke, literally in their most common, slightly visible form, or like heat vapors in some cases (obviously they can take other forms, but this is most common from what I've read from exorcists and from my own experience).

Once I and my brothers were with br. Abdulbadee' of Boston, who is the Ameer of the New England area. He was relating that one day, while sitting in Nizamuddin, there suddenly came a huge amount of noor and tranquility in the markaz. Looking up, he saw that Hadhrat Ji Maulana Inaam ul Hasan and Maulana Umar Palanpuri were returning from their walk.

We then asked him aobut noor, and how one sees it, and how it is different from regular noor, etc. , I should have recorded that conversation. I don't remember that much now, but I'll try to ask my brother if he remmebers.

I've also heard - I don't know how accurate this is - that there are different colors of noor, and people with a very high status can see the different colors of noor on people. Anyone heard about that before?

WHOAH, you know him? It's a small world after all. Honestly I've only been with Jamaat once for 3 days but I have met Br. Abdul Badee' he has come to the local masjid around where I am in Rhode Island, you live in or near boston, brother?

I think a lot of it has to do with appearance, and how much 'hype' there is about the person. If you have been told that someone is a shaykh, wali of Allah, sahib e nisbat, etc ... As soon as you recognize the person, one who has love for the deen will obviously fall in love with them. If someone is wearing white Sunnah attire, a turban, etc ... similar feelings result in the heart. I've seen several examples of where people were wow'd by a person and claimed that they were seeing noor on their face, etc, etc ... and they turned out to be wretched.

Heck, it even happened to me, lol. I had traveled to a hill station a few years ago, and stopped by someone's house for a few minutes. There was a religious TV program going on. There was a man on there talking to kids. He was of age, had an imposing figure, was dressed from top to bottom in the Sunnah attire, spoke beautifully, had a soothing voice, and from his eyes it seemed that he was deep in rememberence of Allah swt. I was really impressed by him and a subhan Allah came out naturally, hehe. My friend observed my for a few minutes, giggling ... after which he told me that this person actually had one of the darkest hearts .. he was a Qadiyaani/Ahmedi imam or something. Appearances, perceptions .. can be veerrryyy deceptive.

Another incident I was told about .... There was a booth setup by Kashmiri fundraisers at an event. They showed pictures of people displaced, and injured by the Indian army in Kashmir. One picture had a man who was bloodied and badly wounded. Everyone looked at that picture and talked about how much noor there is on the persons face. They even looked at his facial expression and commented how much sukoon there is on it, masha'Allah, subhan Allah, etc... They were given the impression that this was a picture of a mujaahid who had been tortured to by the Indian army. Later it was found out that it was actually a picture of a spy/traitor who was beat up by the mujahideen to extract information out of him. LoL .. sigh ..

I'm not denying the whole concept of people having a special spiritual light on their faces which one can actually feel or see .. I've felt this myself ... and know it exists. I'm just saying that with the exception of those who are spiritually very lofty, the most of us (including myself) *probably* end up 'seeing' this spiritual light on individuals who impress us in a way we have programmed ourselves to be impressed.

Excellent point.

I feel personally whether we percieve noor in someones face or not we should always have a good opinion of them. We should feel that they are better than us which will encourage us to adopt their qulaities whilst any bad traits should be ignored by thinking of our own misdeeds.

As Salaam Alaikum,

If you want to see noor, look at the face of Shaykh Nazim, even on his photos you see the goodness. His love of Allah(SWT) and His Beloved (SAW) is shown on his face and in his actions. SubhanAllah.

My sheikh has spoke about this subject and mentioned a few things regarding the noor which emmonates from certain people.

1.How can one see this noor?

The more a person detaches onesself from this world, the more aspects of the ghaib are revealed to them. The less you care about seening these things the more you will see. But some people (Muslim or not) are born with the ability to see these things without any spiritual cleaning. An example of this is a friend of mine who took shahadah when he was 15 and his whole life before and after Islam he can see the Noor of most people. he says some people have a strong light while othres have it weak, He has also seen many Jinns and other terifying things. He once was sitting next to me in Jummah when all of a sudden he started to tremble, sweat perfusely, and breathe hard. Afterwards I asked him why and he said standing next to the Khatib was a Huge beast and it wouldnt go away until the Adhan was called.

I have seen many people who eminate Noor, and like one other person explained, its as if there is a flouresant light shining on them, and them alone.
Once I sat in a halaka dikr circle after maghrib and many of the peoples faces were eminating light as if it were mid day. And I know it wasnt just a reflection of light off light skin because one of the brothers was a very dark complected African American.

I have also seen the opposite effect of darkness on a persons face. This person came to Jummah and i hadnt seen him for a while. I noticed this strange darkness on him as if he were constantly in a shadow everywhere he moved. After Jummah I asked him if everything was ok and he told me he had gotten heavily into drugs and wanted to get clean.

As far as different colors of Noor, My sheikh has said certain colors are Jilali and Jihadi while othres are Jamali. I never asked him about the specific colors or there meanings.

Hazarat Sultan Bahu (RA) talks about the 14 kinds of tajaliyat, or Noor and their various manifestations in hi book Ain ul Faqr.

He writes:
"Know that the Tajalli (Divine self disclosing) is the name of light and it is of twelve kinds at twelve places. One should know that every tajalli may be known from its sign, impression and existent sensibility. The state of tajalli is the hardest state of all because the Gnostics, affirmers, men of remembrance, and those who have joined (wasileen) and thousands of aspirants have dove into the marshy waters of tajalliyat lost the way: they did not reach the shore of safety. Some turned back and others were entrapped by fame. There were those who went gradually to hell because of hypocrisy, innovation and supersensory acts. "

1."The first one is the light (tajalli) of sharia which concerns with the appearance. It manifests on the forehead"
(this must be the light so many of us see on people)
2."The second one is the light of tariqat (path). The light of the heart rises through that."
3."The third is the light of haqiqat (reality). The light of the spirit rises through it."
4."The fourth is the light of marifat (spiritual knowledge). The light of the mystery rises through it."
5."The fifth is the light of ishq (the passionate love). The light of the Divine secrets rises through it."
6."The sixth is the light of Murshid or Sheikh. The light of love and loyalty with the teacher rises through it."
7."The seventh is the light of Faqr (spiritual poverty). The light transcending all other than Allah rises through it."
8."The eighth is the light of angels. The light of glorification rises through it."
9."The ninth is the self-disclosure (tajalli) of jinn’s. Madness and insanity comes out of it."
10."The tenth is the disclosure of self. The light of lust and desire rises through it."
11."The eleventh is the disclosure of Satan. Disobedience and sin come up through it. "
12."The twelfth is the light of the sun. The light of the lightening rises through it."
13."The thirteenth is the light of the moon. The light of the reflection, rises through it."
14."The fourteenth is the light of the Names, the Name Allah, and the Name of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). The light of every letter becomes more luminous and brighter than the flame of the candle."

"In short, the light shines on the faces of the people of shariat. It shines over the hearts of the people of tariqat. The light shines over the people of marifat from top to toe. One should know that the external tajalli is of two kinds: Satanic and egotistic"

"If I explain the tajalli in full, all the papers may be committed to writing and folded up. "

Yeah, I know that isn't the only community, I just used it as a reference point because it is arguably the most well known (to outsiders at least). I know some people who are his murids. Very devoted.
