what is the ruling regarding beautification of masajid? i'm not talking about barelwi style las vegas lights.

would it be considered bidah/excessive for placing a nice chandelier inside the masjid?

Would you care to explain what is meant by 'unnecessary decoration'?

so what do you say? is it allowed?

I'll try to post some excerpts from Hayatus Sahabah on how Rasulullah desired his Masjid to be built once I get back from Jawlah, insha'Allah.

Marco100, I was not implying/saying anything - I am genuinely curious as to what is defined as unnecessary decoration.

From my own experience, purpose built mosques tend to be beautifully & very thoughtfully decorated & I have seen many buildings converted into mosques, that looks as though the bare minimum amount of money has been spent on them – either way it does not bother me in the slightest, as I’m just grateful that Allah , has allowed me to spend some of my day in a mosque.

i wasn't implying anything brother don't get me wrong. you seem a learned person so wanted your opinion that's all.

i'm sure i heard once in a talk that Tamim-Al Dari (ra) placed a chandelier in Masjid An Nabwi. i could be wrong.

Sorry, It just says decorating masjids is a makrooh bidaat. Some bidaats are waajib, some are haramm some are mubah, so like others this is a disliked biddah.

from what i know they were oil lamps which are a far cry from chandeliers.

Rasulullah Sallallahu 'alaihi wasallam's desire to have his Masjid like the shelter of Hadhrat Moosa 'Alaihis salaam

Hadhrat Ubaadah bin Saamit Radhiyallahu 'anhu narrates that the Ansaar once said to him, "For how long will Rasulullah Sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam perform Salaah beneath (a roof made of) these palm branches?" They then collected many gold coins which they presented to Rasulullah Sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam, "We wish to renovate and beautify this Masjid." Rasulullah Sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam however replied, "I do not wish to veer from the example from my brother Moosa Alaihis salaam (who had a shelter made of palm branches). The ceiling (of the Masjid) should remain like the shelter of Moosa 'Alaihis salaam. Another narration states that the Ansaar once collected a sum of money which they presented to Rasulullah Sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam saying, "O Rasulullah! Rebuild this Masjid and beautify it. How long will we perform Salaah beneath these branches?" Rasulullah Sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam however replied, "I do not wish to veer from the example of my brother Moosa Alaihis salaam. The ceiling (of this Masjid) should remain like the shelter of Moosa 'Alaihis salaam.

Describing the shelter of Hadhrat Moosa Alaihis salaam, Hadhrat Hasan explains that when Hadhrat Moosa :Alaihis salaam merely lifted his hand, it would reach the top.

Hadhrat Ibn Shihaab reports, "The pillars of Masjidun Nabawi during the time of Rasulullah Sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam were trunks of palms trees while the roof was made of palm branches and leaves without any plaster. The Masjid would therefor be full of mud whenever it rained. The Masjid was in effect just like a shading."

Rasulullah Sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam refuses to build the Masjid like the buildings in Shaam

Hadhrat Khaalid bin Ma'daan narrates that Hadhrat Abdullaah bin Rawaaha Radhiyallahu 'anhu and Hadhrat Abu Dardaa Radhiyallahu 'anhu were once measuring the Masjid with a stick. Coming out of his room, Rasulullah Sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam asked, "What are you two doing?" They replied, "We wish to construct the Masjid of Rasulullah Sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam like the buildings of Shaam are built. The expenses shall be borne by the Ansaar." "Bring me that stick," Rasulullah Sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam instructed. He then took the stick from them and walked away with it. When he reached his door, Rasulullah Sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam threw the stick away and said, "Never! (the Masjid should never be built like that!) It should be made of grass, sticks and roof like the shelter of Moosa 'Alaihis salaam. Death is much nearer at hand." When someone asked what the shelter of Hadhrat Moosa 'Alaihis salaam was like, Rasulullah Sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam repleid, "When he stood up, his head touched the roof."

Subhanna Allah.

Marco100, who is building and beautifying the masjid and with what money? And what are the circumstances of the masjid: in a poor area, rich neighborhood, someone's personal masjid, etc?

I'm in Abu Dhabi and various shayakh of the Nahyan family finance masajid all over the city, putting their money to beautify them. These masajid are different from a masjid in a rural village in India.

From the Shariah, the maintenance of the masjid was financed by the khilafah state which paid the groundskeepers and imma as well. In that sense, the state would NOT be focussed on expensive decorations when it had poor people to support, wars to wage, government officials to pay, etc. However, today, we are divided into nation states which include regimes that only focus on themselves and like in Qatar and UAE.

So the matter should come down to the circumstances of the masjid. If its a local masjid in London or NYC, putting millions into decoration when Muslim schools and charities need funding would be very misguided. But Allah knows best.

the person in question merely wanted to have a nice looking average (not too expensive) chandelier placed inside the masjid to make it look nice. The thinking is that if this person illuminates Allah's house with a nice light, his grave would be illuminated as a reward Inshallah.
