Default For students of din
this poem was written by a colleague of mine, Zahid.

For Students of Dīn

Once in the life of Imām Shāf`ī,
he felt some weakness in his memory,
so he went to his teacher, Imām Wakī`
who said “You must leave all sins immediately.”

He then said this knowledge is a divine light;
which we cannot see with this human sight.
Our two enemies we must always fight
as they are always with us through day and night.

It’s something for us to learn, O students of dīn,
refraining from sins and evil is what I mean.
We need to keep our hearts pure and clean
and stay far away from the shayātīn.

What did our pious predecessors go through,
to get this knowledge to me and you?
So that we may benefit from what they did too,
toiling day and night; in good health and in flu.

If you want a chance to walk on angels’ wings,
then this chance is open to the one who clings
to the rope of the Qur’ān and the Prophet’s teachings;
understanding their commentaries and their meanings.

The birds in the sky and the fishes in the sea
all pray for the one who is always busy
in acquiring knowledge which is his duty;
not wasting time in some other activity.

Learn this precious knowledge not to gain a label
rather from the darkness take out the people.
Acting upon your knowledge is essential.
The act of disrespect is detrimental.

It doesn’t matter how clever or who you are
the most important thing is turning to Allãh,
by raising your hands and asking through du`ā
thereafter making effort which will take you far.
