Default Not following a sect.
As-Salamu Alaykum

The Qur'an tells us:

Ayat 3:103 "And hold fast, all of you together, to the Rope of Allah (i.e. this Qur'an), and be not divided among yourselves..."

Does this mean following sects is haraam?

As you know, Prophet Muhammed (PBUH) was just a Muslim, just like all the other prophets were. They weren't malakis or shias etc. etc.
So is it true that any one who divides the religion is going against Islam?

We are told to follow the Qur'an and the Sunnah.

Also Sunnis follow the Sunnah, so would it be acceptable to be a Sunni? Just wondering since it is seen as the orthodox version of the religion.

Mad'habs aren't sects.

Shi'ism is an example of a sect; it differs vastly from Islam and disagrees with it and considers adherents of Sunni Islam (same as Islam) to be Kuffar because they reject Imamah.

Maliki is not a sect.
We are told to follow the Qur'an and the Sunnah. Hanafees, shafaees, hanbalis and maalikees all follow Quran and Sunnah.

Also Sunnis follow the Sunnah, so would it be acceptable to be a Sunni? Just wondering since it is seen as the orthodox version of the religion. It is ahlussunnah wal jama'ah.

Allah prohibits Muslims from becoming Shia(Sects) in the Quran, He tells his Prophet PBUH:

English:
{{Indeed, those who have divided their religion and became SHIA you, [O Muhammad], are not [associated] with them in anything. Their affair is only [left] to Allah; then He will inform them about what they used to do.}} [6:159]

transliteration:
{{Inna allatheena farraqoo deenahum wakanoo SHIYA'an lasta minhum fee shayin innama amruhum ila Allahi thumma yunabbiohum bima kanoo yaf'aloona}} (6:159)

Arabic:
إن الذين فرقوا دينهم وكانوا شيعا لست منهم في شيء إنما أمرهم إلى اللـه ثم ينبئهم بما كانوا يفعلون ١٥٩

So Creating a Shia(SECT) Is Forbidden in Islam and Joining a Shia(SECT) Is Forbidden By Allah

i heard from ulama that when difference in aqeedah comes there is a sect formed. difference within fiqh, which is basically 20%, then you have madhabs.

Maliki is a madhab within ahley sunnah. shia is totally different, its not a madhab but a sect.
