I thought it would be beneficial to share some quotes I have compiled by Shaykh-ul-Islam Ibn Taymiyya on the subject of kufr and takfeer.
Shaykh-ul-Islam said [in his Fatawa 16/434]: “Not everyone who makes a mistake [in something which is an act of disbelief] is a disbeliever, especially in complicated matters of considerable dispute amongst the ummah.” He also said [Fatawa 12/487]: “…Whenever [certain people] heard [the early scholars] say, ‘Whoever says such-and-such is a disbeliever’, the one who heard this believed that this phrase encompassed everyone who made such a statement. They did not consider that declaring someone a disbeliever has conditions and impediments which may or may not be present in that particular individual. Additionally, they did not consider that a generic statement [like this] doesn’t necessitate the disbelief of any particular individual until and unless those conditions are present and those impediments are removed. This is made clear by the fact that Imam Ahmad and the majority of the imams who made these kinds of generic statements did not declare the majority of the individual people who their statement could be applied to, to be disbelievers.” More to follow! |
