Assalamu alaikum, first off, ive been posting, but let me introduce myself and give some background.
Well, Alhamdulillah im 18 years old, and have been in madrassah pretty much all my life. when i was in 5th grade (completed) i was taken out to do Hifz Al Quran, Alhamdulillah, after running away a few times(i was a kid!) i completed my hifz Al Quran in 2003, august. In late 2002 i went to india cuz i was convinced i could finish my Quran there faster, anyways i went there in maybe september, and in december i went to,got into a motorcycle accident and practically killed myself with that dumb motorcycle, khair Allah does it for the best. and i came back March 19 03, i came back to the states instead of canada and i didnt go back. I finished my hifz up, but not that great, then in august 04 i went back to school and completed 1 whole year of school, my freshman year. That summer i changed, i grew my beard and started wearing shalwar khameez, and in late 2004 once again, november i went to canada, to pursue my aalim course, until january, i did 1 year and proceeded to my second year in 2 months! alhamdulillah. Anyways i got sick and couldnt go back to jamiah ajax. i studied under Mufti Abdul Majid Khan sahab, and i remember his words right before i left. "if you leave now, you wont come back" and it happened. january to june i spent studying aalim course under Hazrat maulana Mufti Nawaal ur Rahman sahab Damath barakathuhum, and left in june, and went and obtained my GED. and at this point im workin 2 jobs. i went and started going to school in Oakton Community College where i became the Vice President of the MSA, things were going GREAT, until people decided i kept the MSA ("to islamic") according to shariah. i resigned and left that school. Now i have joined harper college for the upcoming spring semester, but my Quran is so KACHA, you know, and im becoming a doctor, i dont know if i should just save up everything, and pack up and go to south africa, and stay there for 10 years and finish up my hifz and aalim course, or slowly perfect my Quran and and focus on becoming a doctor? Can someone please give me mashwarah? specially all the ulema on this forum? Become and aalim and finish your quran in South Africa? OR Just do your Quran slowly and finish your school of medicine? In fact im so kacha, last year not this one but before then when i lead taraweeh, i only did 13 juz. 30-12. what should i do now? |

SubhanAllah tough choice!
If done for the pleasure of Allah, both are very Noble professions...so it is a hard choice. Just make sure inshallah ur parents' orders/wishes are not ignored. Whatever u choose in the end, make sure they r pleased with u inshallah. When deciding a matter, we need to make istikhara (to seek Allah's guidance for our decision) and Mashwara (consulting with others). One who seeks guidance from his Creator and consults his fellow believers and then remains firm in his resolve does not regret for Allah has said: ‘…and consult them in the affair. Then when you have taken a decision, put your trust in Allaah…” you should also ( ![]() In my opinion, I would suggest u think about how u see urself in the future...inshallah. Do u see urself as a doctor working to cure people everyday and saving them from physical ills. OR do u see urself as an alim, striving to spread the message of islam and teaching others, and saving them from spiritual ills. just something to think about inshallah! Both are encouraged by Islam. ![]() |

Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi wabarakatu
My input on this matter as a means of advice would pretty much encompass what the above 2 members have suggested-deep thought and/or istikhara will surely lead you down the right road inshallah. Coupled with that make lots of heartfelt dua and ask Allah swt for guidance-in a matter like this in particular i am certain He will guide you down the best road! Also, if you did decide to go to South Africa and study your hifz and aalim course, then let me be one to recommend it. My brother has completed his hifz and a cousin his aalim course, and both of them as well as others i know of personally have had a good and fulfilling learning course - the teachers there are excellent and the level of islamic education is fantastic at alomost all of the institutions. May Allah guide you through this period of indecision and show you the best solution aameen. |

![]() see if you can get a hold of sh Hussain Abdul Sattar in Chicago. He is a mureed and khalifa of Sh Zulfiqar (db) . He has completed his aalim course ( when he was in teens I believe) but he is doing med school and I believe running an aalim course for professionals. So his situation is sort of similar, teach deen and learn western schooling. Yours is learn both. Maybe he may give you beneficial advice as it would be a case of "been there done that". IMHO. ![]() |

best place ive ever been to in my life. the mahol, the aroma of deen, and coffee at night, (the kids who are hardcore stay up at night studying) man i really miss it. thats all i can say. but it's sad that there are many kids who turning back from there. Parents really need to think 3 times before sending their kids, you don't just send all the bad apples because you can't handle them, you know what I am talking about? |

I think that you should study your secular studies while at the same time benefiting from the scholars in the Chicago area. You should try to finish as fast as possible going to school during the summers, and then become a doctor. If you become a doctor you will never have to ask anyone for money insha Allah if Allah gives you that much rizq. You can also benefit people and save their lives directly getting many good deeds. After you become a doctor you can go study Qur'an and Islam and finish up and become a Shaykh.
Shaykh Hussain Abdul Sattar is a doctor. Actually Shaykh Abdal Qadir `Isa, one of the hugest Sufi Shaykhs of our century and a super-religious man was also a medical doctor. If you make your money from work, and do not charge for religious things, you will get more good deeds for the religious things b/c you are not making money. Also you will not have to depend on other people, and you can give more money to the poor. Just make du`a for Allah to make it easy. Make istikhara before whatever decision you make and consult with some of the top scholars, but not just them, because you know what they will tell you, also consult with your parents and remember being good to them, and consult with friends and family who know you well. Was Salam. |

I would recommend you to complete the 6-year Darul Uloom Chicago part-time alim program with Mufti Nawalur Rahman sahib and do your undergraduate degree simultaneously, taking one year off for dawrah-e-hadith. With all due respect to Shaykh Hussain Sattar and company, you cannot really call the sacredlearning program an alim course, and from what I have heard, he will be the first to tell you that. As far as Quran is concerned, since you are already a hafiz, just review a 1-2 ajza a day, and after a couple years, you should be solid.
If there were a third choice in your poll, I would vote: Become a hafiz, alim, and a doctor. Out of curiousity, where do you want to do your undergraduate degree, and where do you wish to go to med school? |

I am doing my first 2 years at Harper college, if it becomes a University then first 4 years. then UIC is going to be my med school. you guys also gotta keep in mind i work 6 am - 2pm thursday through monday. there is something i did notice withing myself, that forgive me if i seem l ike im bragging, but i was EXTREMELY smart, like in my class i was the only one raising my hand etc, but for some reason it is becoming harder for me to comprehend things, why? i have NO CLUE. so i dont know, it seems to overwhelm me. i need money to pay for insurance, gas, my phone bill and my moms phone bill. so i have to work. |

Btw you can come down to Montreal and your med school and go to madrassa at the same time. (Imam Asim) to be honest, thats where i want to settledown, in canada. but ever since i was a kid, 6-7 years old, i always wanted to be like Mufti Riaz, when i was older, i had made it a priority to fisnish hifz and become mufti. But Allah knows best. |

Another person you can contact in Chicagoland is Maulana Omer Husaini. He is doing his residency at the moment in chicago and he finished his final year (daura-e-hadith) with me in Darul Uloom Zakariyya, South Africa. We both graduated in Shabaan of this year. Since he was engaged in both sciences before coming to South Africa, he might be able to give you good sound advice on this issue. He's also a mureed of Shiekh Husain Sattar. And if you wish to contact me, i'm also available to help out.
There are many other young ulema in the Chicagoland area who can give you good advise as well. |

asalamu alaikum
become an A3lim. You'll never regret it. As a madrasa student myself, I know how you feel. You can become a doctor anyday, but becoming an A3lim is a once in a lifetime chance. 20 years from now, when we become "uncles," people will come up to you and tell you in fact, you did the right thing when you were in your teens to have done A3lim course. This is the Nasih7a I give to you. I hope it all works out InshaAllah. |
