can someone advise me on how to aquire a visa for umrah without being forced to buy a package from a hajj/umrah tour operator as a lot of them are thieves and i wish to avoid them and go independently.

Buy the plane tickets separately without any package and obtain your visa by sending your passport and a picture to the embassy in London.
That's how we did it but my uncle knew someone in London and sent it to him and he obtained the visa's for us.
It shouldn't be too difficult.

is it easy to obtain the visas as i would not want to lose the price of the tickets if i get refused the visa.

can the visas be obtained on easier and quicker by going to the embassy in person rather then by post?

I believe that you can go to the Saudi Embassy to arrange the visa in person...might be an all day job mind you, but if your there bright & early, they may complete yours on the same day.....

I only know this, because my brother in law was very close to having to do this, although it was finally sorted through his Umrah 'agent'....

You can't walk into Saudi Embassy and ask for an Umrah Visa and get it.

The simplest asnwer is to ask a good/honest agent to arrange for your VISA and tickets and then don't buy package. I know a Mufti Saheb who is very honest and straightforward guy (very refreshing in our times) and he can Insha'Allah help you out. If he can't help you, he will give you a straight answer.
