Asalaamu alaikum, brothers and sisters.
I was wondering what the most common misconceptions about Islam you hear are. And how do you handle them? Sometimes, as a new revert, I have a lot of trouble refuting the nasty things people say to me because I don't have enough knowledge to do it right and my emotions at the moment can make it worse, astaghfirallah. And on a lighter note- what's the funniest thing you've heard regarding your faith (especially if you live in a Western country)? |

Salam
one of the funniest/dumbest misconceptions i heard was from a ****te. i asked her about the infallible status of the ahle bayt and the institution of imamate which they created. i asked her if it was true that some twelver ****tes believed that (naudhubillah) the angel Gibreel madce a mistake in giving the message (i.e. the quran) to Muhammad (saws) and that it should have in fact gone to....guess who... ...ali (ra) she replied absolutely not, rather it has always been you sunnis who contend that umar should have been the prophet, i couldn't believe what i had just heard. anyways that's gotta be the dumbest thing i've heard in the west, sad thing is it didn't come from a "non-muslim". |

[Wa 'Alaykum Assalam]
If I know how to get rid of the misconception I try to answer. If I do not know then I tell them that ask someone more knowledgable in this. If I know someone more knowledgable in the particular topic then I direct them towards that person. Above everyone there is a person with more knowledge so no one should feel all sad that 'Oh I don't have knowledge'. As long as you have knowledge of Fard 'Ayn [which is acts and knowledge that every single Muslim should know and learn about [such as learning how to pray and laws related to it]] I try not to involve my emotions get the better of me in such situations because it does not help me. But this does not mean to approve the opposition's hatred for Islam or to become apologethic Muslims etc,. because we are to be happy about being the followers of Muhammad [peace be upon him] because He is the Greatest Man to have Walked On This Earth and He is Described as a Mercy to Mankind in the Quran. |
