Default Anybody live in San Diego Area
As salaamu alaikum,

I'm moving to San Diego this summer inshAllah, and wanted to see if anybody either lives around there, or knows of any deobandi affliated Masajid and, or, Maktab for my children.

Jazak Allah Khairun

I used to live in San Diego and worked at a full time deobandi Hifth school. There's only a couple that I know of.

I live in San Diego.

I have to tell you now, there aren't many Deobandis here at all.

In fact, San Diego is almost entirely Salafi and Modernist Ikhwani.

Besides the Tablighi Masajid, of course.

There are, however, two Madrasas here that are Tablighi/Deobandi.

One is located in Masjid Noor (which I assume is the one Brother Sulaiman is referring to), and another is in an office complex.

As for schooling, there is an Islamic School, but it is run by Modernist Ikhwanis, so they have some issues, although it's better than most other choices. I was a student there, actually. However, alot of people just home school their children here, or take them to Charter schools, so that is another option availabe as well.

My friend and her husband (and two kids) were originally from San Diego, they had been in SA while he completed his 'aalim course. Recently they moved back to San Diego. Maybe they'll start something soon!

If you don't mind me asking, do you know the brother's name, because I've heard of a brother that just came back from completing `Alim madrasa in South Africa around February?

His name is Mawlana Musa Sugapong.
He answers questions on the Ask Imam site as well.

He would be a real asset to his community especially due to his beautiful akhlaq.
May Allah Ta'ala accept us all for his Din.

And thanks to other brothers for helping out. I will check our Masjid Noor. Is that the Masjid Noor that is 50th st? If so thats less than a mile from where we will be living. My wife's cousin teaches at Masjid Ansar, but although I haven't met him in person I'm sure this is a salafi Masjid since most somalis are salafi these days.

I can give you more info but I dunno if the mods will approve it be done on a public forum. You could just tell me the name and location of the Hifz school, that shouldn't be problem as it is public knowledge.

The school is part of masjid Noor in City Hieghts. So you if you go there you can speak to some responsible brothers about enrolling your children. They also have a Charter school program with Muslim teachers and separation between boys and girls.

Many muslims live close together in City Heights. Masjid Noor is very active with A'maal. May Allah make your travels easy, bro.

Yes, I think that's who I was talking about. I believe my Qur`an teacher knows him. So he studied at Madrasah In`aamiyah?

I haven't heard of any programs he's running yet, I hope he helps rejuvinate the San Diego area. You wouldn't believe how strong the anti-Hanafi sentiment is around here.

MashAllah, thats good to know.

Yes, Masjid Ansar is a Salafi Masjid, but it's not as bad as you might think. They're good brothers, as far as I know.

Just be careful to keep your children from the Madkhalis if they're older. The youth here (i.e. around 20), if they aren't Tablighi or Ikhwani, are almost all Madkhali, and they work very hard to spread their da`wa.

I've never heard of him, and I've lived in San Diego for over 20 years.

Never mind...Imam Tahir is in San Jose not San Diego. San Diego is a nice place though--just curious, but is it San Diego where there's that large bridge that goes out to that resort island? I can't remember if it was San Diego or some other San whatever. The resort island always struck me as really odd...like some walled off enclave for the rich.

Anyway, make sure to come down to Arizona to at least visit the Grand Canyon, the Painted Desert, and some of the other natural wonders in the north.

Do you mean Cornado? If so, it's a really beautiful island, and I don't think it's a resort island. I'd reccomend visiting if you're in the area.

As Salamu Alaykum

I am familiar with San Diego. Logan Islamic Community Center is also another Traditional Sunni Musalla. Most of them are converts who studied from a variety of people (Haba'ib, Shaykh Hamza Yusuf, Imam Zaid Shakir, Shaykh Muhammad al Yaqoubi, Shaykh Muhammad an-Ninowy, Shaykh Yahya Rhodus, Shaykh Khatry, Shaykh Salik, Shaykh Abdullah bin Bayyah, Shaykh Abdul Karim Yahya, and many others). They primarily follow the Maliki madhhab, though you will find some Hanafis and maybe two or three Shafi'is.

Ustadh Muhammad Yahya studied in Mauritania, Syria and Morocco for over several years.

Ustadh Malik studied in Badr Institute and at Dar al Mustafa

We also have Shaykh Abdul Fattah who is also a graduate of Dar al Mustafa but specializes in Tajwid and comes from a lineage of Tajwid specialists from Hadramawt.

Shaykh Musa Sugapong is a good friend of mine and I am also good friends with his older brother Abu Bakr.
