Lol No, I painted that on canvas and used oil paints as a medium. That particular painting is not my personal invention - its a common symbol used by some Qadri silsillas and used in various awrad - Ive painted probably 30 of those and sold them to fellow talibs all over the world - I can paint one of those paintings in about 2 hours now - and I usually only charge about $30 dollars to the mureeds of my sheikh who request them - that covers the canvas paint and about $15 dollars for my time - before now - nobody but fellow mureeds ever expressed interest in that particular painting. I used to make a modest living off just paintings - Ive had some of my work in galleries here in the US - I also have painted several murals for local Halal restaurants in the state. Im having trouble uploading the jpegs I have on my computer - can someone explain how I can post the pictures? |

Keep it up. can you post the a pic of the painting. For other paintings - I write the caligraphy like Hasan Mosoudy - and just take a large brush and begin with sweeping strokes. |

Brother MujahidAbdullah you gotta help me out here. I've done some painting before, heres something I did for my wife (I know, I know, I'm an old romantic at heart );
But, all my paintings are in water based colours. I only paint very occasionally but I would really like to do some Islamic art in oil painting, but have no idea where to start. Where did you learn and is there any sites you refer too? beautiful paintings by the way. |

Both of you paint beautifully, Intrepid and Mujahid.
Intrepid, have you considered simply purchasing oils and experimenting? You certainly have the talents that you could probably do well on your own with it. You all are making me feel inspired to create again. I have not done anything for a long time now. I used to like colored pencils and charcoal. I also liked to play around with odd things, such as painting with nail polish or drawing with makeup. |

Brother MujahidAbdullah you gotta help me out here. I've done some painting before, heres something I did for my wife (I know, I know, I'm an old romantic at heart ); If its acrylic (acrylic is water based and easily cleans up) than your good because the two are simalar - except oils dont clean up as easily and they take days to dry. My "mursheed" of painting was a guy named Rocky - I grew up in a town called Manitou - this town is very artsy - There is a famous painter there named Rocky, and as a kid I used to go to his studio and watch him work, he taught me how to work with oils. Its not that hard - you should do what poring rain suggested and just buy some and start experimenting - thats how I learned when I was a kid, and Rocky got some of my artwork in galeries when I was 12. One thing to remeber is that oil paints are worked in conjunction with solvents (flak seed oil, linseed oil) the common ratio is 1 part paint two parts solvent - the more solvent you use, the longer the paint takes to dry - you can add Alkyd resin or Japan drier to speed up the drying process. Adding solvents and driers can affect the texture and appearance of the painting - so experiment with all differnet types of paints, solvents and driers to acchieve your desired affects. For example - if you look at the painting "Haqqiqat Muahmadi" - its very glossy (and hard to take a picture of) - this is because I used a large amount of solvent (4:1 ratio) - this was so I could achieve the right texture I wanted - and it took about a week to dry. Also buy some mineral spirits to clean up with - and keep them in a re-sealable container. Its also good to keep your oil brushes seperate from your acrylic brushes and seperate from water color brushes - each medium effects the bristles differently, and oil brushes work best after multiple uses. Also - on the topic of brushes, be careful on which brushes you buy, because some are made with Bores hair - and I dont know the fatwa on that, but I wouldnt feel right painting the name of Allah with pig hair. And dont sweat being a romantic - the painting of the tree was one I did for my wife - the chicks really love sensitive artist guys. |

When I first became Muslim, and before I could read Arabic - I made several attempts at caligraphy, and a few times when I showed the painting to an Arab - they laughed because I mispelled things. |

Assalam alaikum brother! MashAllah your paintings are beautiful!
Brother pls help me with one question- can you do an oil painting on a wooden plank rather than a canvas? If yes, can you give some tips and if no- what is the other option I can use as I would like to make a huge painting and a canvas of that size would be difficult to find... JazakAllah khair! wasalam. |

Oh! good to know - I copied that poem out of one of Sultan bahus(RA) poetry books - I can only read a few of the words, and I just assumed it was all in farsi - I havent really shown that painting to any Muslims who can read it - is the writing ok? Like I said - I dont speak punjabi, and I can barely read it, so I was just copying the words from the book The writing seems perfect to me. You just missed out the first word 'Alif ie الف' unless the book you copied from didn't have it. I tried to look up for a version without music but alas my search was in vain. that picture and the two connected Allah Muhammad and the tear drop are my favourite. oh and br Intrepid's rose. edit: here's a non music version. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U6lrK...eature=related |
