Sister, may Allah ease your dilemma. It my own humble, unqualified opinion, I would suggest that rather than travelling to the USA and attempting to study there with a niqab, maybe you could find somewhere in Qatar to study medicine? Although you may feel uncomfortable and conspicuous wearing the niqab in Qatar, it is still a country that will tolerate you covering your face. I have a former student who has moved to Qatar, maybe it’s a different area where you live, but this is an extract from an email she sent me: ...but then again..where with no qualms niqab!? Rather than give up on becoming a doctor now that you have come this far, look for some place to study where there is segregation, somewhere closer to home and in a place that will not make you compromise your admirable consciousness. As for this question.... Are there any doctors who do niqaab?do you know any, seen any? !? |

As-Salami alykum warahmatulah wabarakatuh
Dear sister, I live in the USA, nyc...travelling to the USA and living here yourself will be a very bad choice. life here is a rush, so even if you meet good sisters to be around, everyone is busy with their life here and free time is hard to come by. DO NOT COME HERE UNLESS YOU WILL HAVE YOUR CLOSE FAMILY AROUND YOU OR A HUSBAND! Plus, going to med school here would mean you will bearly have time to eat and sleep, and go on 30 hour work shifts in hospitals after finishing up the first couple of yrs of classes at med school. How will you maker namaz? yoll have to make fajr without going to sleep, and one you go to sleep, how will you wake up for namaz after being up for 35 hours straight? If you can do this, alhamdulilah, and if not, alhamdulilah. Plus, expect to pay 40-80 thousand US dollars per year, depending on where you are going. I also believe that people nowadays are too attached to this phenomenon of madhabs, this didnt exist in the prophets time, but thats another story. There is no evidence saying one MUST cover the face, yet there is evidence that not doing so is permissble. Of course simple logic tells us it IS better to cover the face, but no where, to my knowledge, does it say we must cover the face. This conclusion was only reached through peoples own interpretations (i am NOT saying niqab was not worn). I personally would love to marry a sister who wears niqab, because i want to marry a pious sister and it surely is a sign of piety(but many other countless factors are invovled too). this differnece based on hadiths is a mercy from allah. here in america, wearing niqab would completely isolate you from society, this is not what islam is about. This is why i believehe issue of niqab is the mercy from Allah. If niqab was fard/wajib, why are women not allowed to wear it during hajj or salah. People must know that Islam is menat to make our lives easier, and not impose harships upon ourselves. This is why our Ummah is sturggling, we are continuously bickering of things we should not arugue about, and we end up making our religion diffucult. Allah tells us to fear him as much as we can...i would love to be able to pray 12 rakat duha and 12 rakat qiyaam and 12 rakat tahhajud, but im just not able to unless i stop doing everything else in my life; we should never overburden oversleves and impose hardships upon ourselves. Making istikhara doesnt mean you will get an answer in a dream or a "feeling," but when making it you put your decision to allah, to make whats best easy for you and whats not, to keep you away from. People nowadays refuse to accept allahs guidance, we ask allah to guide us yet we still remain treading on the path that WE want and beleive is best for us. How can we ask allah for guidance and then jsut push it to the side? One time i made istikhara about attenind al-azhar ( i live in america). When i wooke up i felt like i had to go, but thats only because it was from my nafs. i would love to dedicate my life to studying islam, but thats not for me. i found out the next day i must have memorized at least 2 juz from quran, should be fluent in arabic, and it will cost me a good deal of money to live there (im a college student here and dont work, i wont ask my parents to support me overseas, plus ill have to spend yrs to become fluent in arabic). I come from a non arab speaking family, and im the only one who was guided by allah to submit(insha'allah my family, relatives and all of us will be guided), jsut recently in the past 2 yrs. So even tho i felt like i was gonna go according to my istikhaara, allah revealed to me through knowledge and my situation that it was not feasable, given my conditions. So to me, if u made istikhara, and you are getting all these torubles and bad signs, it clearly means to stay away sister, no matter how much YOU] would love to become an MD. May allah guide us all. Ameen. |

As-Salami alykum warahmatulah wabarakatuh Sorry to get off topic, but, as far as I know, you don't need to speak Arabic to get into Azhar. Actually, Azhar accepts almost everyone, and then places them according to their level of knowledge. |

yes brother, but how will i live in a society where i would be speechless in. the classes are not in english either, rather fushe arabic. People speak English to some degree over there. Plus, you'd learn fus'ha in Azhar. Believe me, not speaking Arabic is not a barrier to getting into Azhar. I know of people who spoke no Arabic, and who now have been attending classes at Azhar for over a year. If you're still interested, you could contact brother Suhaib Webb. |

There is an all girls medical college in dubai....but that may be too further a field and also travelling restrictions...... Wassalamualykum Yes Sister,i have heard of that college in dubai, but as with most gulf countries ,they prefer the citizens strongly and your right, there are travelling issues. Your interested in med studies?thats great..mashAllah but jus get a clear picture of what it ll be like ,where u ll be studyin, workin, the future wit it.ofcourse all is in Allah s hand but planning is also important.when i finished high school,my family asked what i wanted to do,i said 1st -islamic studies...n they kinda laughed n all n said then wat?,so i thought doc is the next close, noble ,direct service to Allah, for my ppl.thats all i had in my mind.my brother warned me its tuff n all but i din listen,i did no survey, nothin(he knows m not the hardworkin kind who ll sit 14hrs n study!) but i went to college n boom~! wat a surprise i got..all the noble ideas started to fade n i wanted to jus finish! lol..i know that sounds bad but m being honest..the stress is killer,by the 3rd yr, i was like-i jus want my degree n over! ill think abt further studies later! but neways everyone says -a doc is no good witout an MD...so now everyone is on my case to do MD,n forget everything else.my family is stressed out abt my 'future'.honestly,i wanted to get married, settle down n like i mentioned before, study deen properly,do my pardah in peace but almost evryone is like "no! do ur MD,its imp! marry later...etc etc" so jus make sure wat ur gettin into n how much ur willin to put in.please don think m discouraging u in any way,m jus sharin my experience. sometimes i do feel its imp to have lady docs who r good muslims too,n thats where i feel guilty n selfish.. i think this is how i would put it-if you have the taqwa and the will,u ll survive!(i feel i lack both! but mayb inshAllah u have it in u) may Allah taala guide u to whats best wat for u in both worlds..ameen yup..it would be soo good to see sisters in niqabs! it would also instantly give a bonding feel.when i see any sister in niqab,i feel like talkin to her,i dono y..but gives s a feelin of "we belong"..ok..but not exactly the niqabi sisters here..i mean like sister soupy said-its not really "hijab",its a weird concept of hijab here-wit a ton of make up! wit the niqab.may Allah give them and us hidaya and istiqamat.ameen |

I don't understand why you should get stressed over the niqab. You still have the right to wear the hijab. Why become sad over something like the niqab which is not fard. Brother bladeknight,i dont want to get into the debate abt niqaab being waajib or not. All i know is -i started it and want to do so till i die.i am not sure abt my persuing Masters, but i am sure abt my niqab.if i am doing it,atleast i am sure it pleases Allah taala inshAllah, and i know the BIG difference it makes.when i jus did hijab-scarf and abaya-many men still would talk to me,be normal-i would try to avoid but the point is,they didnt get it-they din understd the whole point of hijab-they probably look at it as some new fashion trend or somethin, but with the niqab, instantly the reactions change!subhanAllah. while i was workin at a hosp for a short while, often my colleagues ,men women would sit n talk, the moment i would enter, the guys often left..lol..my presence sort of threatened them. so wat i am sayin is-the answer to the question of not doing niqaab could/mayb be doubtfu to some but the answer to doin it is sure-Allah taala inshAllah is more pleased. more over,i would never feel happy wit myself for giving up on it.i d feel like i betrayed myself. |

Jazakillah for ur duas. Yes sister soupy,i suppose those options are out coz of travelling issues.i jus wish i knew more sisters who are docs n did niqab,it would give me strength n inspiration. could i get in touch wit the sister who is here?i jus moved to this country and i have no friends,n i am looking for some pious sisters. she s right-like i said-weird concept of hijab here...jus couple days back,i saw a poster saying there was goin be a abaya fashion show or gallery or somethin like that, okay it was only for women, but walkin a ramp in abayaaas!!?? i totally agree wit u,it must be tougher in the west.thats y i was opting for a muslim country but they have issues everywhere now. Your last line made me smile and makes me want to carry on and i know it would be good ,jus wish it was easy too! ( or rather i wish i was stronger!) |

As-Salami alykum warahmatulah wabarakatuh i answered the issue regarding wearin niqab or not in my reply to brother bladeknight. like i said, for me,its more than that-abt following a madhab-i jus feel its right. i understd wat u mean abt istikhara but honestly,i overall dont want to do MD but its my innerself that seems to say i must.so i dont think answer to the istikhara is a no.ya its gettin difficult but i think mayb i m makin excuses.i dont know still.i want to see wat i can do best abt it. |

I could pass your email address on to her and also email her about you. you can ask the mods to do it.
Although, she is also quite educated she completed all her secular studies from home via the Open University and studied Islam with us a for the duration. Masha Allah, very level headed and concious of a woman's place in Islam. Insha Allah she would be a good friend. |
