Default Fasting in the month of Rajab
Fasting in the month of Rajab 2009-1430 Fasting in the month of Rajab Can there be any particular advantage in fasting throughout the month of Rajab?. Praise be to Allah. Firstly: The month of Rajab is among the holy months which interpretation is said ( by Allah of this is ): 'Verily, the range of months with Allah is twelve months (in annually), therefore was it ordained by Allah on the Day when He made the heavens and the earth; of them four are Sacred (i.e. the 1st, the 7th, the 11th and the 12th months of the Islamic calendar). That's the best faith, therefore wrong perhaps not yourselves therein' [al-Tawbah 9:36] The holy weeks are: Rajab, Dhu'l-Qa'dah, Dhu'l-Hijjah and Muharram. Al-Bukhari (4662) and Muslim (1679) narrated from Abu Bakrah (might Allah be happy with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: 'The entire year is twelve months, of which four are sacred: three successive months, Dhu'l-Qa'dah, Dhu'l-Hijjah and Muharram, and Rajab Mudar which comes between Jumaada and Sha'baan. These weeks are called holy for 2 reasons: 1- Because preventing therein is forbidden until caused by the enemy 2- Because transgression of the sacred boundaries therein is worse than at other times. Ergo Allah has forbidden as interpretation is said ( by him of this is ):, sins to be committed by us over these weeks 'wrong perhaps not yourselves therein' [al-Tawbah 9:36] Even though doing sins is haraam and forbidden during these months and at different times, in these months it's more forbidden. Al-Sa'di (might Allah have mercy on him) said (p. 373 ): In the expression 'wrong perhaps not yourselves therein', the pronoun might be comprehended as talking about 12 months. Allah states he has built them a of time for His slaves, which they could use for worshipping Him, and thank Allah for His benefits, and they serve the passions of His slaves, so avoid wronging yourselves therein. The pronoun can also be understood as talking about the four holy months, and this forbids them to wrong themselves in these months particularly, in addition to it being forbidden to complete wrong at all times, since it's more forbidden at this time, but it's worse at this time than at others. End quote. Secondly: Regarding fasting the month of Rajab, there's no sahih hadith to point that there's any particular advantage in fasting all or section of this month. What some people do, singling out some times of Rajab for fasting, thinking that they're much better than others, doesn't have foundation in sharee'ah. But there's a study from the Prophet blessings and (peace of Allah be upon him) which suggests that it's mustahabb to quick during the sacred months (and Rajab is among the sacred months). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: 'Fast some times of the holy months and perhaps not the others.' Narrated by Abu Dawood, 2428; considered as da'eef by al-Albaani in Da'eef Abi Dawood. It suggests that it's mustahabb to fast throughout the holy months, even when this hadith were sahih. Therefore he also fasts in another holy weeks, and if your individual fasts throughout Rajab as a result of this, there's nothing wrong with this. But singling out Rajab for fasting isn't right. Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah (might Allah have mercy on him) explained in Majmoo' al-Fataawa (25/290 ): For fasting in Rajab particularly, the ahaadith concerning which are all da'eef (poor), and actually mawdoo' (created). The students don't depend on some of them. They're perhaps not one of the da'eef ahaadith that have been read concerning benefits, instead many of them are made and false. In al-Musnad and elsewhere there's a which states that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) enjoined fasting the holy months, specifically Rajab, Dhu'l-Qa'dah, Dhu'l-Hijjah and Muharram, but it has related to fasting throughout them all, not only Rajab. End quote. Ibn al-Qayyim (might Allah have mercy on him) said: Every hadith which describes fasting in Rajab and hoping throughout a number of its evenings is false and manufactured.' End quotation from al-Manaar al-Muneef, p. 96 Al-Haafiz ibn Hajar mentioned in Tabyeen al-'Ajab (p. 11) There's no sahih hadith that might count as proof which speaks of the advantage of the month of Rajab, or that speaks of fasting this month or portion of it, or of investing any particular evening of it in prayer. Shaykh Sayyid Saabiq (might Allah have mercy on him) explained in Fiqh al-Sunnah (1/282 ): Except that it's among the holy months, fasting in Rajab is no much better than fasting in just about any other month. There's no statement in the sahih Sunnah to claim that there's something unique about fasting in this month. Whatever has been read concerning that's unfit to be cited as proof. End quote. Shaykh Ibn 'Uthaymeen (might Allah have mercy on him) was questioned about fasting on the twenty-seventh of Rajab and spending that night in prayer. He replied: Fasting on the twenty-seventh of Rajab and spending that evening in prayer is a bid'ah (development), and every bid'ah is just a going astray. End quote. Majmoo' Fataawa Ibn 'Uthaymeen, 20/440.
