Tehelka Magazine had the following introductory remark about him:
AG NOORANI Lawyer Don’t argue with him, he knows all the arguments. And don’t dabble with him on constitutional history, he knows It all. A constitutional expert, he can give you a run for your money for details which even the finest historian might miss. And he is absolutely impeccable, he won’t write for you, barring for The Statesman for which he wrote for decades, and lately for Hindustan Times. A rare gem, among the judiciary, an intellectual who fights nonstop. Of course he has liberal leanings. Perhaps because of that he has managed to say few things in the context of Muslims that most would cringe at mere thought of. In this thread we would like to mainly about two of his books. On is titled Islam and Jihad and another one is RSS and BJP : Divison of Labour. He has the incisiveness and decisiveness of Edward Said and the detractors have no chance when he makes a case. Thus in personal view of yours truly, in spite of his liberal inclinations, he is an underestimated asset for Ummah. |

![]() The distance between liberals and Shuyukh is rather vast. I can not tell you how difficult it is to talk about Islam to even Aligarh type Muslims. Liberals are even beyond them. We have huge gaps to fill up. In fact even to keep going one will do better by not thinking about these real gaps. |

Tehelka Magazine had the following introductory remark about him: there is too much misinformation to accurately talk about situation when these conditions are not met. on a society level upon things he has witnessed himself perhaps his books can benefit others in some way. but Muslims learning about J!had from a liberal-leaning lawyer who has perhaps never participated in any J!had of any sort is simply not feasible. |

from the amazon link:
A.G. Noorani provides non-Muslims with the history and understanding of certain basic concepts needed to counteract the recent upsurge of ill-informed prejudice against Muslims not only in the West but also some Third World countries; and for Muslims to see through any tendency to romanticize the crude and un-islamic brutalities of fundamentalists whom he sees as imposters who are misusing the faith as a political weapon. "A graceful and compelling attempt to show how Islam can be modern and true to its traditions. Through gentle, probing questions, Noorani offers a frank assessment of ossified traditionalism and suggests a rationally satisfying way of being Muslim in the contemporary world. His analysis echoes the disquiet many Muslims feel about fanatical fundamentalism." -- Ziauddin Sardar, author of The Future of Muslim Civilisation and Introducing Islam i settle my case. |
