The fact is, unless your facial hair is straight, it will always look "unkempt" to some people. The best thing to do is grow it long; that way at least it looks like you are keeping it intentionally, and not like you were simply too lazy to shave for a week. Combing also helps if it's not too curly. If it's really curly and you comb it, it will just become even more curly. I don't know why some people (Muslims included) have such hatred for this sunnah that they say it looks dirty and ugly (both terms which have been directed to me in the past by a fellow Muslim). May Allah guide them.

How do you guys keep smart beards? ![]() use some good quality hair oil brother, it does wonders for the old beard. i never believed it until i started doing it, trust me my beard looks way better than it did 1 and a half year ago, owing to the fact that i oil it regularly. when im at home i oil it some what heavily sometimes, when i leave home for juma, taraweeh, or important events i oil it lightly, just because it looks thicker healthier. oilingyour beard also softens the hair over time (one week and you should notice the difference) and allows you to comb it straighter. and remember when your beard is still young it might look a little funny to some people and some adults may say it's unseemly etc. but whast does that matter the point is allah and his rasool desire it, and that's who your doing it for. if you're doing it for someone other than Allah, then sure you can trim shave it if they complain about it, but if your doing it for Allah why on earth should nyone else's opinion matter? so make an effort to groom it to the best of your ability, then put your trust in Allah, remember you are being tested by Allah. Rasool (saws) said that a time will come when holding ont he sunnah will be like holding on to hot coal we're in that time. |

I've found that beards can feel quite uncomfortable between about half a centimentre and 2cm, but once it gets past about an inch long it tends to feel more comfortable. When something is uncomfortable, one reasonably enough might well be more aware of it. You might find that if you grow it a bit longer you won't notice it so much. After it's been there a year or more it becomes so much a "part of you" that you won't want to cut it at all.
Regarding how it looks to other people, however, I wouldn't be too concerned about that. If Allah (subhanahu wa-ta'ala) had meant a person to have no facial hair, then that's the way they would be. Of course, there's nothing wrong in wanting to make other people feel at ease in your presence, and some people do feel threatened by men with long beards. However, you should consider your motivation for both wanting a beard and/or for wanting to cut it short, if that's what you decide. Any decisions based on peer pressure, or even more so upon wanting to impress a particular person, male or female, would reflect on yourself alone. As the Prophet (allāhu ʿalay-hi wa-sallam) is reported to have said, the rewards of deeds will be based upon their intentions. All the same, and with this saying in mind, hopefully you won't get accepted or rejected by Allah (insha'allah, subhanahu wa-ta'ala) based on the length of your beard, or indeed on whether you have one at all. |
