Default Mission: Study Abroad--Need your Assitance (financial and spiritual)!
As-salaamu 'Alaikum,

I'm a recent graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a B.A. in Philosophy, and minors in Arabic and Hispanic Studies. After much reflection and dua', I've decided to pursue a PhD in Islamic Studies, with the aim of representing Classical Islam in western Academia, inshallah. However, It is crucial that I first strengthen my Arabic abroad, and also study at least the basics of Islam with traditional scholars. With this in mind, I have planned for some time now to study Arabic in Jordan with the Qasid Institute; Alhamdulillah, as many of you know Qasid is an institute of high repute amongst both Muslims and Western academic circles. I have been planning to begin my studies this coming September, and have been working for over a year to help me meet this goal. However, due to family circumstances, I have had to use my savings for other expenses, and now find myself in need of financial support--and this is what Allah willed, Alhamdulillah! If i am to move forward with my plans, now is really the time to go abroad, and it would not be wise to delay my studies any longer. This is why I ask you to kindly assist me with what you can financially to help me meet my goal of comfortably traveling to Jordan to study Arabic at the end of this month. Though I would only stay for as long as financially possible, I would inshallah love to study for at least 6 months. A reasonable budget for 6 months, including tuition, room, and board, is $7000. Alhamdulillah, with working and with the help of my community, I have saved approximately $6000. I am so close to that $7000! I ask you, to please consider contributing whatever you can to help me, and I ask you to please keep me in your duas. I have set up a paypal account which can be easily and securely used to donate funds online, using the following link:

https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/websc...if%3ANonHosted

Please feel free to pm me should you have any questions about myself, or my plans. Again, any contribution is greatly appreciated! Thank you for your time!

BarakAllahu feekum,

Good intention.

Have you considered Nadwah in India? Top of the line Arabic studies - as good as any Arab Islamic school plus very very low expenses.
With $6000 you can live like a King for years yet I believe even the Hostel facilities are free, even the tuition. Plus the advantage of traditional Scholars.

Don't think it'll be tough to stay there, Americans have been studying even at Deoband where it involves more mujahida [weather, food]...

walaikum as-salaam! Thank you for the suggestion! Alhamdulillah, I've read a lot about the institute--but I have so many friends who have been to Qasid, and those first-hand narrations have really sold me. Also, I'm all set to go to Qasid for a 3-month semester, deposit paid, and nun-refundable ticket purchased. My goal is to fundraise to stay longer than that, but now I am seriously considering perhaps shifting institutes (perhaps to nadwah!) after those three months (based on finances). Is Nadwah truly suitable for the American lifestyle? I promise I don't ask because I am high-maintenance, but rather because I'm afraid of having to spend too much time "adapting", as opposed to learning. 6 months (maybe three if I got to Qasid first) is just not that long, so going to a place with higher risk of getting sick, or any serious adaptations that distract from studies seems unwise. Nowhere else America, I'm sure, but of course some places take more out of the American than others--that is precisely why I'm not going to Mauritania (yet! inshallah in the future!) for just 6 months, despite all the good we it has to offer

a) There will be mujahida involved but as I said many westerners are studying at Deoband, Nadwah and Mazahir.
b) I suggest you don't avail of the hostel facilities, get your own room, would be around $10 to $20 a month.
c) Food? You'll adjust, luckowi food is just very yummy
d) If you leave home by asking aafiyatt from Allah SWT and prepare to be ready for anything that comes your way, Allah SWT will open up ways.
e) And believe me that thing which comes through mujahida, will be that much more sweeter. More the mujahida, more the blessings.

f) Read this carefully:

May Allah give you tawfiq. My only advice is that if you have time, spend a few years seriously studying with `ulama before pursuing a PhD at a Western University. More than one person has gone in with the aim of defending Islam and come out as an apostate, والعياذ بالله.

I am not being derogatory but isnt going to India for Arabic similar to going to china for English. How many Indians or even towns/cities in India have a decent Arabic speaking population? I would think naturally Arabic would be best studied in Arab-land simply because you will be engaged in an enviornment where Arabic is the predominant conversation and literature . There are english language centres in china as well but I wouldnt suggest someone going there but go to places where english is spoken widely. If you dont want to go to Anglophone countries for english go to singapore or a british colony.

Brother if you want to choose a non-Arabic speaking country consider IIUM if you want an American kind of life at cheap cost.

Look at this comment on youtube about this debate

the first international arabic debate championship was held april last year in qatar..this university (IIUM) was the only non native speaker contestant during the comp. the malay team made to be in the top 4 teams among 40 arab teams n went to the semi finals.2 IIUM teams met at semi final, A (arab) vs C (malay), the rests were khartoum and emirate, the malay team lost at semi but that's a good proof enough our debating team can challenge the arab teams n defeat them

This is the video where the comment was. You get see native malays speaking Arabic.

This is just my opinion. I have no friend in IIUM or no recommendation and have only seen it once during a quick tour. It probably is less traditional as compared to Darul Nadwah.

My post is not to mean IIUM is better than nadwah, just that it is probably more high class. I dont know where you will become a better arabic student.

Brother I suggest before taking such a huge move that you try to complete 1 or 2 books here under local scholars. If you show the capacity then go forward.

May Allah SWT save us all from such ilm. Ameen.
Whats that dua for asking Allah SWT to give us only that ilm which will benefit us?

@mubarakr, thats the problem with you guys, you don't leave home and so stay un-knowledgeable.
Jama'ts from all over the world are coming to learn dawah in India, Ulamah jamat's that too brother. What should one say to that?
The result of the sacrifice of the Ulamah e Deoband has Allahumma barik fihee has kept Deen alive in India.
Not a single madrasah, forget a madrasah, even in a maktab you won't find the Hafith saheb without Sunnah's [Sunnah beard, kurta etc] - and this is true about even the barelvis - but I don't know much about the La Madhabis.
But in Al-Azhar, there are scholars who come in shirts and trousers? Scholars?

Indians would look you up and down if you tell them you are a Hafith and you want to teach Quran for their kids, and then they wouldn't look at you again.

That's why you know brother, India is a special case, and with regards to people not speaking Arabic, India is home to 250-300 million Muslims, so one would hardly notice.

And with regards to the quality of Arabic taught and spoken in top Indian Madaaris like Deoband, Mazahir, Shahi, Nadwah and Dabhel - They are as good or even better than any madrasah in Arabistan, and Arabic in Nadwah is brilliant. I know most of this because my own brother has formally graduated from Deoband in Ifta and also from his circle of friends who are Scholars themselves - one among them topped his class of 700 in Arabic.

Leave home.

I know Deen has a strong good presence in subcontinent Muslims. May Allah make them more engrossed in Deen. However we are talking about Arabic language but I am learning from you brother. You might be right because I dont have any first hand experience with these institutions. I was thinking more along comfort lines that malaysia would be good and more modernized place for the brother. I am planning and trying to strengthen my niyat that also after 3-5 years to take a year or two off and go for Quran hifz and Arabic study. Pray for me that this materialize. And now that you have mentioned this places inshAllah it may be one of them where I end up.
