Mumbai: Islamic seminary Darul Uloom Deoband has asked the Saudi Arabian government to ban Ahmadiyas,also called Qadiyanis,from visiting Mecca and Medina to perform Haj and Umrah (mini-Haj ).Though Ahamdiyas claim to be Muslims,scholars of mainstream Islam have declared them non-Muslims and in some Islamic countries like Pakistan the Ahmdiyas face persecution.Last year,a bomb blast at a Ahamdiya mosque in Pakistan had killed dozens.
In a memorandum to Saudi Arabias ruler King Abdullah,Darul Ulooms vice-rector Maulana Abdul Khaliq Madrasi said,Stop them as they are misguided and may mislead other Muslims. Followers of Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (1835-1908 ),the Ahmadiyas are scattered across the world.Their current spiritual head called Khalifatul Masih (successor of the Messiah) Mirza Masror Ahmad is based in London.In Mumbai the small sect has its centre at Mumbai Central.
Reacting to Darul Ulooms plea against Ahmadiyas participation in Haj and Umrah,Maqbool Ahmad,media co-ordinator at the Ahmadiya Jamaats headquarters in Qadiyan,said: We are not aware of it.But Darul Ulooms campaign against us is not new.

Qadianism (Ahmadiyyat) holds two cities in India (Qadian) and Pakistan (Rabwah) as holy as Mekkah and Madinah. Qadianis (Ahmadiyya) are supposed to perform Hajj by attending their annual congregation, instead of visiting Mekkah.

The problem is because Qadianis usually keep average Muslim names, therefore the government of Saudi Arabia cannot detect them if they come from other countries.

However, Qadianis who have a Pakistani passport cannot go for Hajj, because the Pakistani passport is the only passport in the world which has a religion column. In order to acquire a Pakistani passport, you have to sign a declaration which says that you consider Mirza Ghulam Ahmad as a liar and false prophet.

The solution for this problem is for all other Muslim countries, especially Bangladesh, Indonesia, and West African countries (where there are significant communities of Qadiyanis) to add a religion column to their passports as well.
