I always thought charities just use a percentage of the gift aid money to fund themselves.
So if you donate to charity A £10, they get say £2.50 from UK government they spend £2.50 on admin. they spend 'your' £10 on directly helping people. and there you have a 100% donation policy. I do not know if UWT go even beyond this, their profile on the charities commission website is certainly pretty amazing to look at. http://www.charity-commission.gov.uk...idiaryNumber=0 |

where does ummah welfare trust get money for the day to day running of the charity? All the charity's costs are covered by: - ‘Lillah’ donations specified for administration. The charity has a separate account for its administration fund to ensure the 100% donations policy is maintained. - Income generated from UWT clothing banks. There are over 100 clothing banks across the UK. Donated clothes are sold and the income is allocated to the administration account. - Profits received from the UWT Ummah shops and charity shops. Ummah shops sell brand new Islamic items and the charity shops sell new and nearly-new clothing items that have been donated to UWT clothing banks. - Tax reclaimed from the UK government’s Gift Aid scheme. This allows taxpayers to increase the value of their donation by 25%. This additional money is allocated to the charity’s administration fund. |

Anyone else notice all the wastage of money that goes on in these charities? I get fully printed envelopes and brochures every year...all that money, paper, ink goes right into the bin.
Charities perform a function....but they should be temporary because for Muslims it is the khalifah who collects Zakat and re-distributes it to needy people...we should not make these charities into a substitute for the khalifah. The Khalifah would also stop riba and interest based banking, trade and finance so many of the problems of war and poverty caused by riba would diminish. Muslim charities should be encouraged to stop wasting money or trying to guilt people into giving them money. People coming to my door almost everyday in ramadan for collections. |

Abu Zakir
Which planet are you living on. The likes of UWT are doing us a favour. If they were not doing this, you would have had to find zakat deserving people yourself and then dispose of it. As for publication, this is needed out of necessities. People today look for professionalism in matters of charity organisation. This makes their account transparent for others to scrutinize. Unless you can changes peoples mindset, your complaint is ill founded. I know the person who head the uwt campaign and is a very sincere hardworking individual who gives all his time in religious ventures. The likes of him sacrifices his spare time and at the same time works for a living and teaches is not many of us could do. Instead of winging, help them out or you can wait for the Khilafat to materialise out of thin air. Allahualam |

![]() I just realised i donate money to UWT admin almost without realising it! It's very clever and i like it. For example the other day, i donated £10 for the Eid Gift fund. it asked me for £0.19p optional donation to cover admin, and of course because i made niyyat for £10, i accepted. So alhumdullilah UWT gets to take that £10 directly to the kids who need it most, and cover their admin. (I just remembered for a £5 zakatulfitr donation, it was 40p charge i think) - so it varies on the type of donation being made) I like this, hopefully more charities will do things like this. For the record, i've been fortunate enough to meet the founder of Islamic relief and the chairman of Muslim Aid - no one can doubt anyone in that organisation's sincere committment to help Muslims. Islamic Relief especially has become a benchmark in its professionalism. Dr Hany El-Banna stated he LIKED it when new Muslim charities came up. because they weren't taking the same money, but helping more Muslims. Also Islamic relief is a member of DECC which is very important because it means it gets non-muslim money also in disasters to do its work. it's work is also sufficiently 'mainstream' that the UK government donated £5 million to it this Ramadan. Think about how many Muslims that will help Inshallah. For sure, they may approach things from a different angle, but then that is what they are for, and that is what UWT is for.. My personal belief is to try to donate (even small amounts) to different charities - they all have their specialisms and they are all doing it with the right niyyat. p.s. I believe Muslim Aid also has received funding from non-muslim charities to deliver aid in muslim areas (not branded with the non-muslim charities name) - they can only do stuff like this because they operate in a certain way.. and they are still delivering benefit to muslims alhumdullilah |
