Default Is this appropriate behaviour in Islam?
Asalaamu alaykum wr wb

I work in an islamic primary school which uses hidden cctv cameras in all the classes. Nobody knows of the existence of these cameras and we were not told they are installed and regularly used.

I discovered their existence by accident. I and another teacher are the only ones who know.

Islamic schools like state ones use enhanced CRB checks to weed out undesirable applicants. If a state school uses cctv they clearly inform parents and teachers of the wherabouts of these cameras.

Our headteacher uses these cameras to eavesdrop on personal conversations. We then get a lecture on gheeba in the meeting, and policy is altered amended in the light of these snoopings. The head uses information gleaned for personal advancement and control.

Is he not a party to gheeba himself? Is he guilty of eavesdropping? Is this not a sin? Or is his behaviour trustworthy and of a high moral standard and we deserve to be monitored silently and possibly iilegaly and our private conversations scanned by the head teacher?

To be honest im personally disgusted and feel violated.

If its possibly illegal then you have a problem sister, coz you dont have redress by law. Otherwise, if your country allows such kind of "evesdropping" then the school and the head does not need to hide the Cameras.
Also parents would be happy that their children are being monitored closely but in your case you say it is being misused.
You must confront them but remember if you do then it might also work against you.

Leak the information: Make location of all the cameras public. If you fear that you will get into trouble for doing so, then do it anonymously. Print out a single page document that shows the location of the hidden cameras that you are aware of, and leave it in a public place within the school (outside the view of cameras, so that you don't get caught). Keep doing that once a week until you start hearing or observing chatter about it, thus confirming that the information has successfully spread. As soon as one kid gets a hold if it, the information should spread pretty quickly.

I would trust the kids in your school to vandalize the cameras on the regular basis . Or if they don't vandalize them, at least it's not a secret anymore - and their parents can object.

That is utterly disgusting, and you are right in feeling violated. But I suggest go with vagabond's suggestion - that way you keep the job and beat the system too...
Why don't you create a blog and put out the info? It can be done anonymously, you know that.
If the school has a social networking page - or something close to that sort of stuff, paste the blog link and let the fun begin.

There's one thing I'd like to know, by personal conversations, do you mean of the students? Or are they even installed in the staff premises?
I also think its better if you get an opinion by an Ulamah, possibly bro abuhajira or Mufti Hussain.

Speak to the headmaster about it up front. Then figure out how to proceed based on what he says. I think when young children are under the care of strangers, cameras are a good thing.

Interestingly enough of it seems to be a violation in of itself. Doesn't sound nor seem to be of normal nature....You might want to ask around and check in with some other staff at your workplace...... :Fishy in nature. Allah knows best

First of all he is an alim!! Personal means between adult teachers not kids. I think hes very paranoid and needsto know what people do and think behind his back. I think hes misguided and this may turn nasty one day. For now im too scared to rck the boat so ill leave it in hands of Allah. Inshallah

Yes but keep it secret? Since noonehas beensacked since installation its use has been degraded to eavesdropping and spying on otherwise outztNding muslims. It has been misused for personal gain and power play

I think you should confront him in a group, preferably with other teachers who already know about the hidden cameras. Then you can discuss this issue in an open manner without making any party to feel embarrassed.

Anyway are you a brother or a sister? If you're a sister then maybe you'd want to edit your profile? Then you can discuss some sensitive issues in a subforum dedicated to sisters. If you're a brother then I apologize. I ask this since the first reply addressed you as a sister.
