New Data Highlights Additional Benefits of Amniotic Mesenchymal Stem Cells

Boston, MA, June 7, 2010 ? A recent study published in the scientific journal Circulation Research by the Keio University School of Medicine in Tokyo reports that mesenchymal stem cells derived from human amniotic membrane have the ability to differentiate into heart muscle cells at a higher capacity compared to mesenchymal cells derived from bone marrow or fat.

This new source of stem cells may therefore regenerate heart muscle cells and help repair damaged cardiac muscles better than stem cells from alternative sources. These results were obtained from tests conducted on mice and demonstrated that the cardiac function of animals in the experiment improved from 34% to 39% after two weeks of treatment. Scientists also reported that cardiac cells re-created with mesenchymal stem cells from amniotic membrane could survive for more than four weeks without being rejected, even without the use of immunosuppressive drugs.

?As evidenced by this recent study, amniotic stem cells represent an important hope for the future of stem cell therapy,? said Prof. Simoni, Scientific Director at Biocell Center.

As Prof. Simoni explains, ?Biocell Center has been studying mesenchymal cells from amniotic fluid for years and is the only company in the world that is able to offer the service of amniotic fluid stem cell cryopreservation to women performing genetic amniocentesis during their pregnancy.?

?I believe strongly,? concludes Prof. Simoni, ?that stem cells contained in the fluid surrounding the fetus are very important and valuable. Their collection during genetic amniocentesis presents no risk and storing them potentially safeguards the future of a child.?

Biocell Center has a commitment to mesenchymal stem cell research and continues to participate in ongoing projects with affiliates worldwide. Currently, together with the Massachusetts Ear and Eye Infirmary, Biocell Center works on the differentiation of amniotic fluid stem cells in photoreceptors for the retinitis pigmentosa.
